Smart Weed for Tanuing. A writer in the St. Louis Globe-Demo srat is enthusiastic over the discover! that a variety of the smart weed wliici grows wild in Missouri in such profusioi is to be a nuisance, surpasses bark in itt banning qualities. As its only cost if that resulting from the labor of cutting and stacking it, say $5 a ton, wliilt bark costs in that State $112 per ton, il is argued that hereafter millions o! hides will annually be made into leathei in the West instead of being sent to th< Eastern States to bo tanned, which in volves the expense of transportatior both ways for the leather consumed ii the West, besides paying the Easteri capitalists and mechanics for work whicl could just as dMl bo done at home. Il is said that this plant yields at least tei per cent, of tannic acid?an analvais ht the Nebraska State chemist gives nearly twecty-two per cent, from the root anc seventeen to nineteen per cent, fronf tin plant?hemlock and oak bark yielding from eleven to thirteen per cent. Bn Bven if the results stated by the Ne broska chemist are correot, it does noi follow that this weed will make as goot leather as bark. There are peculiai properties for making good leather fount in bark that, so far as is generally known, have never boon equaled in an3 other material. More or less ?anni< acid is found in almost every plant thai grows, and in some the percentage o: tannin is as high as from forty-four t< fifty per cent. Yet the leather produoec by the use of these plants has nevei come into favor, and tliat made from some cf them is bad in color. Few people unacquainted with pliysi logical chemistry are aware of the quautity o iron in the blood, bnt all should kuow the im porta 1 ice of keeping np the supply, for debility disease and death are sure to follow when thi juautity becomes too maoh reduced.
