The only nd vico oar farmers hate had proffered litem latterly (and it has ootxto irom every quarter of the compass) was that they should plant less cotton. 'Whether they have heedod this advice wo oannot tell, nor will we koow until next full. But we are sure there are some good su?ges tions in the following, thatTau be profit ably applied to himself be every farmer in the south. Let every one who reads it ask himself the question, am I not guilty fas he reads each suggestion : A farmer should not foed his st-?ck in the publio highway, thereby losing the drop pings of stook, and the time aud trouble of banting his stock that may stray off ; he shoold not let his op?'n ditches be tome filled with falling timber and do. aayinggrass, but keep them quite clear ; he should not leave his ploughs and bur rows out all winter, should not keep more stock than ho oould feed well , should not put off going to mill ui til the meal tub is empty ; should not put off hauling wood until the wood house is empty ; should not go to town oftcncr than he has business ; and when ho does go, should keep away from tho grog shop* ; should not beat his stock unmer cifully * shoold not run his wagon with oat grssse; should not put his ploughs away oovered with mud ; should not cut wood with a dull axe ; should not bother his neighbor too often to turn the griud* stone for him ; should not let his wile milk in bsd weather ; should not Bufier gape left down in the fcuoo ; should not throw the grubs from the fenco corners into tho publio highway- ;-shmHd not 4et too much fenoe rot dowu before begin, ning to repair ; should not keep scrub stook of any kind ; should not put of! ditching uutil ploughing time, thereby having two jobs on hand ut once and but one hand to do them ; should not let corn stand out all wiutcr as feed for birds and mice. Restoring Wcrnout Soils. A fannor who will exhaust tho feriili ty of his land by raising uny crop until it no longer yields a fair return f'<>r labor expended in its culture, deserves no-pity from anybody. Such a system of fann ing is far too common, but none tho les n disgrace to those wjio practice it. We will also add that a man who undertukts to make farming pay while depending upon commercial manures purchased in tho market, is pretty sure to como to grief sooner later. There arc fur better methods of restoring fertility to wornout eoils, and it is rather strango that our farmers have not learned them before this late day. Keep more stock. espe cially sheep, raiso green crops to turn under, also roots to feed the stock, turn under as woll as soiling crops, such ns drilloorn, millet, find clover, all of which will tend to enrich tho farm instead of making it poorer. When wall stirred add blood-warm water, or, preferably, milk and water, to mix ; add a IMBtaalt, halt' teacupful of homo-made'yeHpor three table-spoonfuls ot baker's^ast. Mix in the evening as for bread, and lot rise. In the morniog shape thorn with ti c hand and board, and lot them rise ten or fifteen minutes after putting thorn in the pans ; then bake ; fifteen ininutoa will auffioe if the oven is sufficiently heated. Good bread may be niado in tho same way with a proportionally smaller quan tity of lard and bntter. Carving.?Fifty years ago tho art of carving was regarded by the, most pol ished society in Eugland and in thif> country as the indisponsablo accomplish ment of every lady who had to preside at tho head of hor table. It was a reflyo tion apon her fitness for the post to say that sne managed a carving-knife with little skill, or was^ignorant of tho choice parts of oaoh dish. Fashion has changed all that, and the offloe of carving is now assigned obiefly to gentleman; but there is no reason why ladies should not know *11 the niceties of the art, and bo able, when oiroumstanoos require, to preside with ease and skill at the head of tho tn ble.
