If, therefore, thesa color indicate tho presence of strychnine in tho stomich of a in .in who has di>-d nn der suspicion* eireumHturicos, the pre* umptiou of poisoning with sttychniuc would bo very strong, unlosi he li id re cently taken into lh>.' stomach s<>:ne sub stance probably coutainiug a trace of Btrychnioo sufficient to respond to the color-tests, but was not sufficient in quantity to produce any poisonoUH or deleterious effects eveu in tho largest doses of the supposed substance that can bo taken into the stomach. Now, whis key is such a substanoo. The manufac turers find that by the use of strjchoini in their fermenting vats they get a lar ger yield of spirit, and on cheaper terms, tliau by auy other proocss. ltenc<*, it 'u very extensively employed by the large manufacturers j aud often, though not always, leaves in the whiskey produoel a sufficient traco of its presence to res pond to the color-tests, though net onough to produco any deleterious ef fects on the h?alth of the drinker. The | color-tests, as cvid^nco of poisoning, would therefore be nugatory, il thoj-cr son Buspeeted to be poisoued had re ceutly imbibed whiskey; and the chemist to make his tostiiuony of any value in such case, must prooocd to quantitative analysis] that is, to separate tLe atiyeh nine sufficiently from all other mbatuueo# by processes woll know to chemistry, to ascertain the precise quantity then exis ting in the stomach. In a recent trial for poisoning, the foreman of the jury happened to bj ac quainted with the foregoing facts. The phJh?ioian who made the p-mt mortem examination stated that ho found noth ing to conviuoc him that the deceased died from poisoning, uutil he found from the color-tests evidence of the presence of strychnino in tho contents oJ' the stomach; that by this cvideuco ho was ^oy, and hud probably imbibed it on moruiag of his death. Tho foreman, therefore, to save himself from the eui* barrassing position of being compelled to aoceptas good, cvidtneeagainst tho life of the accused, which, though of the highest personal chnractor, bo knew irom the foregoing considerations to be utterly nugatory, asked him if the quan tity ofstryohniuo in a dram of common whiskey would not probably yield all the characteristic color* of strychnine ? and ho promptly answered, "Yes; if there woro any at all ; for the thirty-thousand th of a grain would produco thom." Tho Court, howover, ruled this out, on tho ground that there was no proof of fered that thcro was any strychnino at all in whiskoy. It is, howover, a well known fact. Tho Zodiacal Light. Now all theso are pretty hvpothesca?scientific toys built up in forgotflilncss of one fhet whi-h. when announced, knocks them to piveos! That/hot is this: that in tbo' complete darkness of a total ocllpse of tho sun w,. fee nothing of tho sodiucal light nroun.l bhn. ^Vot, il it were duo to either of the causes abovo mentioned, it would hlaio forth in that darkness, and conMi ?ute (lie grandest and most impressive phenomenon of a total eclipse of the sun.
