We were sitting iu our room at tho Glades Hotel, in Oakland, Maryland, one day with a oharmiug lady who had dropped iu on a visit. One of our windows looked into that of unother room bo placed by the position of the main building that half of its interior oonld be seen. We were looking up and admiring a little ohubby, blue eyed two-year-old, white aB enow, who waa pulling a bouquet to pieces aud toning out its fragments, or olopping her hands with delight as a train weut thundering by. "These rooms," said our visitor, " have some very tender associations for me." "Why so?" we asked. "Well," ehe answered, "during the war the greater part of the hotel was seized by the Government as a hospi? tal, and wo were crowded into few rooms. My Bister and I bad this. In that room where that little beauty is wer two Union offiaers, one Bick of tho fever and another of a wound. It was hard to tell whether they were slowly dying or slowly getting woll. I never saw suoh ghostly skeletons to be alive. We were 'seoesb,' and not mo? dest about it, either; but still our hearts aohed for the poor youog men, ao ill, perhaps dying, far from friends and relatives." "It bothers one to know how this should be a hospital." we said, "it is so far removed from active opera? tions." "It was thought," she answered, "that tho mountain air of tho glados would be more favorable to recovery than elsewhere, bo this wsb made a hospital. One day one of those officers dragged himself to the window and under the impulsa of the movement my sister asked if we oould do any? thing for them, and he answered, gasp? ing for breath, that a iittle cbiokeu or soup would save their lives. Chickens were rare in those days?an army is hard on poultry. The men will work all night, after marohing through the day, to secure a few chicken*; so that when the hospital nurse and physician had an unlimited supply of luxuries] in the way of wines, potted meats and canned vegetation, they were without anything fresh. We knew where a few ohiokons were hid iu u cellar by a neighbor, and we coaxed one out of the owner, and after a deal of vexa? tious trouble?for nt every turu wo were met by a fixed bayonet and an insult?we got the soup ready, aud us the guard in the hall would not permit us to approach our patients, my sister attempted to baud tho bowl to?thi> of? ficer in the wiudow. Just as bu v/ns feebly reaching for it aud she stretch? ing nerself half out to givo it to him, a harsh, ugly voice below cried aloud, 'Look out there?poison!' fcJho nearly dropped herself, soup and all. Draw? ing back sho hesitated a second, and then she took the spoon and began eating the broth. 'Oh, botberl' cried the officer. 'Don't waste it that way; I'm not afraid;' and sho gave him the Bonp. It soomod to revive them, aud they oontinuod steadily to improve, as day after day we supplied them with ohioken broth until the cellar was empty. During this time wo stood at the window talking aud wo snug to them?Bang 'My Maryland' and all tho Southern songs we knew, until thoy were well enough to leave the hospital and return to duly. They both seemed sorry to go, and forced on as a quan? tity of hospital stores aud some coiTec, whloh last we needed sadly. Then one gavo a ?ng aud tho other a brooch, aa tokons of their kind feelings." "And did they never return?" wo asked. "One did not; for, poor fellow, ho was killed in the very next battle in which he was engaged. His com? panion wrote us about it, and the writer insisted upon opening a corres? pondence with my sister; and soon his letters grew into lore letters, and after a time they were engaged. Nearly a year subsequent to tbie our patient got leave of abecence and oame on to be married. He pat np at a hotel, and? will yon believe it??onr own brother, who was in the Confederate service, and knew nothing of my sister's af? fairs, led a band of guerillas into our town at night and captured bis intend? ed brother-in-law from his bod. ""Mm not only deferred the tnarrage, but de? prived the young West Pointer o bis promotion, that hud been promised (or gallant service in the Gold. It was really aggravating, for exchanges hud almost ceased, and it looked aa if the lovers would have tn watt until this 'cruel war was over' before they could be united." "You should have appealed to Abraham Liocoiu to give a married brigadier for uu unmarried lieutenant." "We did better. Proounug passen, wo went through the lines and ap? pealed to Jeff Davis. Jeff suid ho would put my brother's prisoner in his uistcr's keeping. They have beeu happily married these many years. He is brevet-briu.udier general uow, und it all came of our nursing the enemy in that foom." Hure is the foundation of u dramu superior to that given by Boncicault iu Belle Lumur.?Don Piat.
