A Love Story or the War. We were sitting in our room at tho Glades Hotel, in Oakland, Maryland, one day with a oharming lady who had dropped in on a visit. One of our windows looked into that of another room so placed by the position of the main building that half of its interior 000.13 be seen. We were looking up and admiring a little chubby, blue eyed two-year-old, white as snow, who was pulling a bouquet to pieces and j tossing ont its fragments, or olupping her hands with delight us a train went thundering by. "These roomB," said our visitor, " have some very tender associations for me." "Why so?" we asked. "Well," she answered, "during the Kar the greater part of tho hotel was seized by the Government as a hospi? tal, and we were crowded iuto few rooms. My sister and I bad this. In that room whore that little beauty is wer two Union offleera, one sick of the fever and another of a wound. It was hard to tell whether they were slowly dying or slowly getting well. I never saw such ghostly skeletons to be alive. We were 'secesb,' and not mo? dest about it, either; but still our hearts ached for the poor yonng men, so ill, perhapB dying, far from friends and relatives." "It bothers one to know how this should be a hospital," we said, "it is so far removed from active opera? tions." "It was thought," she answered, "that tho mountain air of tho glades I would be more favorable to recovery than elsewhere, bo this was made a hospital. One day one of these officers draggod himself to the window and under tho impulse of the movement 1 my sister &Bked if we could do any? thing for them, and he answered, gasp? ing for breath, that a little chioken or soup would save their lives. GhiokenB were rare in those days?an army is hard on ponltry. The men will work all night, after marohing through the day, to sucuro a few ohickens; so that Whan tho hospital nurse and physician had an unlimited supply of luxuries] in the way of wines, potted meats and canned vegetation, they were without anything fresh. We know whero a few Ohiokens were hid in u cellar by a neighbor, and we coaxed one out of the owner, and after a deal of vexa? tious trouble?for at every turn wo were met by a fixed biyouet and an insult?we got the soup ready, aud ua the guard in the hall would not permit us to approach our patients, my sister attempted to hand tho bowl tOjthu of? ficer in the window. Just as hu v/us feebly reaching for it aud she stretch? ing uersolf half out to givo it to him, a harsh, ugly voice bolow cried aloud, 'Look out there?poison!' Sho nearly dropped herself, soup and all. Draw? ing buck sho hesitated a Bocond, und then she took tho spoon and began eating the broth. 'Oh, botberl' cried the officer. 'Don't waste it that way; I'm not afraid;' and sho gave him the soup. It seemod to revive them, aud they oontinued steadily to improve, as | day after day we supplied them with chioken broth nntil the collar was empty. During this time wo stood at the window talking and wo sang to them?sang 'My Maryland' and all the Southern songs we knew, until they were well enough to leave the hospital end return to duty. They both seemed sorry to go, and forced on as a quan? tity of hospital stores nod some coffee, whloh last we needed sadly. Then one gave a ring and tho other a brooch, as tokens of their kind feelings." "And did they never return?" wo asked. "One did not; for, poor fellow, he was killed in the very next battle in whioh he was engaged. His com? panion wrote us about it, and the writer insisted upon opening a corres? pondence with my sistor; and soon his letters grew into lore letters, and after a time they were engaged. Nearly a year subsequent to tbie our patient got leave of absoonce and oame on to be married. He pat np at a hotel, and? will yon believe it?? onr own brother, who was in the Confederate service, and knew nothing of my sister's af? fairs, led a band of guerillae into our town at night and captured bis intend? ed brother-in-law from bis bed. This not only deferred the tnarragp, but de prived the young West Pointer of bin promotion, that hud been promised for gallant service in the field. It was 1 really aggravating, for exchanges had almost cea??d, and it looked uh if the lovers would hove to wait until this 'crnel war was over' before they could be united." "You should have appealed to Abrubam Lincoln to give a married brigadier for an unmurriud lieutenuut." ?'We did better. Proouriog passes, we went through the lines unit ap? pealed to Jeff Davis. Jeff, said he would put my brother's prisoner in his Mister's keeping. They have been happily married these muuy years. He is brevet-brigadier gem rul now, and it all cume of our nursing tho enemy in that room." Hero is the foundation of a drninu superior to that given by Bnneicault iu Belle Limar.?Don Pint.
