The Charleston Neios and Courier, of the 29th nit, eaye: The long immunity which Charles tun has enjoyed from disastrous gules was interrupted, yesterday, by a dis? aster which has probably destroyed over $250,000 worth of property. Io tbo early part of tho present month everybody was on tho lookout for the equinoctial storm, because there exists a kiud of tradition that Bevere and dis? astrous equinoxes occur once in every twenty years, and it is just twenty years since tho destructive gale of 1854. But when tho 2latof tho month bad passed without bringing tho disagreeable visi? tor, people began to think that Charles? ton would after all escape tho dreaded infliction. For over a fortnight tho wind bad been blowing steadily from the East, and at times the weather bad assumed a threatening aspect, but not sofliciently so to warrant the appre? hension of a gale. On Sunday even? ing, at n lato honr, it began to blow Btiilly in puffs and to rain, und by day? lip ot tbo wind hud increased considera? bly, blowing from the East and South? east. Tho steamer Dictator, which arrived in tho morning, reported heavy weather nt sen, but tho captain failed to observe any indications of the coming blow. About hulf-past C or 7 o'clock in the raoruiug the wind, grew strouger, with heavy tqnalls and severe puds, which created general apprehen? sions. At 8 o'clock, it was evident that tho gale was upon us. The eea wus heaving and tossing in tho harbor, and the rapidly encroaching tide began to flood tin wharves und streets. Tho squalls kept constantly increusiug iu btrengtb, and Ihn masters of vessels in port begun to look anxiously to their moorings. At 0 o'clock, the tido had risen so high that, it covered all the .vhtrvea on the Eastern front of the city and flooded tho streets ro the depth of several feet. Many of the wharves were washed up, and several vessels parted from their moorings and were driven on sdioic. The bceue at tho wharves at this tirao was terrific. Iu every direction drift-wood, bales of cotton, wrecked bouts und debris were btiug tossed about. The wind, whistling through tho rigging of the shipping) made me? lancholy music, and the blinding rain falling iu torients rendened efforts to save anything almost useless. On South Battery the destruction was equally sudden and terrible. The water poured, in vol? umes over the abutment, and long be? fore 8 o'clock wus fully two feet deop in the lawn of White Point Gardeu. The beautiful battery is now a soeoe of ruin, and it is calculated that it will tako at least $20,000 to repair tbe da? mage done at this point alone. At 1) o'clock, a messenger arrived at tbe main Guard House, with tho news that the frail bridge, leading to tbe bath fog house, had been swept away, and bathing house itself, witb its owner aud hia family, wbo were in it, were in imminent peril. Tbe news spread like wildfire, and in n short time hundreds of excited spectators h<"* assembled on tho battery to satisfy tucmaelves as to the truth of tbe report. Tbe gale at thin time (10 o'clock) was absolutely furious; a terrible hurricane, burling huge musses of water over the high battery and rolling huge breakers breast high along the houth walk. Tbe gardeu was fully four feet under water, presenting a olear sheet from East to Mouth Battery. But all cyee were turned from tbe 6oeno of devasta? tion immediately around them to a poiot of more thrilling interest. Tbe bathing house, out off as it was from ull communication with the laud, was racking ou its foundation, and it was at once eeen that ovcry effort must be made, without delay, to rescuo tho uu f or tu unto inmates. These were Mr. M^Munmon, his wife and two children, aud a young man who occupied cue of the roomy. The first attempt was made by a uomber of colored fishermen and policemcD, headed by Mr. H. Nott Parker, tbe stroke oar of tbo Palmetto boat crew. A yawl bout was procured from the uumboru usually moored around Morelaod's Wharf, und witb twenty-five or thirty volunteers, the leaders drugged the long and anxiously looked-for boat tbrongb the water, which was quite sufficient to float bcr across the garden to the spot imme diately opposite the bit thing house on tho South walk.
