The Charleston News and Courier, of the 29th nit., save: Tho long immunity which Charles tun Iiqb enjoyed from disastrous gales was interrupted, yesterday, by u dis? aster which has probably destroyed over ?200,000 worth of property. Iu the early part of tho present month everybody was on tho lookout for the equinoctial storm, because thero exists a kiud of truditiou that sovoro aud dia asttous equinoxes occur uuco in every twenty years, and it is just twenty years since the destructive gule uf 185d. But when tho 21st of tho month had passed without bringing the disagrceablo visi? tor, people began to think that Charles? ton would after all escape tho dreaded infliction. For over u fortnight the wind bad been blowing steadily from tbo East, and at times the weather bad assumed a threatening aspect, but not snlViciently so to warrant the appre? hension of a gale On Sunday even? ing, nt a lato hour, it began to blow Btiilly in puffs and to rain, und by day I if .i tbo wind had increased considera? bly, blowiug from tho East and South? east. Tho Btcamer Dictator, which arrived in tho morning, reported heavy weather at sen, but tho cuptnin failed to observe auy indicutioua of the coming blf-~. About hull-past G or 7 o'clock iu the morning thu wind, grow stronger, with heavy tqnulls and severe pufls, which created general apprehen? sions. At b o'clock, it was evident that tbo galo was upon us. Thu sea wus heaving and tossing in tbo harbor, aud the rapidly encroaching tide begun to flood tbo wharves and streets. The squalls kept constantly increasing iu strengt*.:, und ihn mabters of vessela in port began to look anxiously to their moorings. At ? o'clock, the tide had I risen so high that it cove reel all the wharves on the Eastern front of the city and flooded tho streets ro the) depth of several feet. JMany of the wharves were washed up, and several vessels parted from their moorings and were driven on thoic. The bCcue at the wharves at this tiroo was terrilic. In every direction drift-wood, bales of cotton, wrecked bouts and debris were btiug tot:fccel I about. Tiie wind, whistling through the rigging of the shipping, made me? lancholy music, aud the blinding rain fulling iu torrents rendencd efforts to snvu anything almost uselcBS. The lido rote to a great height, in muny instances lifting the flooring from the piers aud reuderiug it extremely ha? zardous for anybody to stand in tho vicinity. Tho sea in tbo harbor rolled mountain high, and the waves dashed over the piers in huge rollers. At Ac commoduliou whurf u bark wus driven from her moorings high up on the! > lauding into the wharf office of Camp I bell, Wyliy & Co., but was biown off again when tho wind shifted. So gr* ill wus the force of tho winel that j tho bowsprit of tho vessel entered thu i m Cond story of tho building, which j ivits i I brink, and eut it completely in ' tv.n, making a eh nu split. The lint was then lifted by the ?vavi's uiid liir.nvu transversely aciost I the dock, mailing a complete bridge [between the. two piers. The British batk Belliste, which hud lately arrived j from Liverpool tied was anchored in ; the stream, was blown Iriim her moor? ings, detpile two heavy anchor:, held i t?y seventy five and forty-five b et of j iron chain and dragged into the dock I between Boncg iiiul Atluutie wharf. I The v. ii.il in the extreme Southern limit of the Eastern water front tvu I complete ly washed away, aud the piorti immediulelj atljoiniug on tho North, at which were moored the steaunis City l'oiut and Dictator, wore ulso badly damaged. Tho work of dost ruc? tion continued without interruption until about half post twelve, when tbo wind moderated for a short lime, and then shifted urouud to Ihn South and West, when it again blew with full force for about uu hour, teariug the slate and tin trom tbo roofs of many buildings and blowing down trues and fences in every direction. Thechunge in the direction of tbo wiud, however, had the effect of turning the tide, and j in an incredible short time tbo waters began to lull, and people begun to breathe easier. As boon ait the wind shifted ihe ruin ceased to full, and the , streets, which hud np to this time ! been dangerous to pedestrians, on ac? count of Ihn falling shingles, signs and I fences, wore now crowded with people I who tmd come out to view the effects ? of ' hu Storni. The scone on the battery, while tbo gale wus at iiH height, was at onoe sub? lime aud terrible. The sea wall pro L.UME X?NUMBER 165. monade on Eaat Battery, which on Saturday night last was throDged with promenaders, was almost entirely sob merged. The angry waves dashed over the stones in hnge billows aod flooded the street below, teariug up the hugo flag-atones and washing away tbo shell road. On Mouth Battery the destruction wus equally auddun and terrible. The water poured iu vol? umes over the abutment, und long be? fore 8 o'clock wus fully two feet doop in the lawn of White Point Qardeu. Tho beautiful buttery is now a sueue of ruin, and it is oaloolated that it will tuko at least $20,000 to repair the da? mage done at this point alone. At 9 o'clock, a messenger arrived at the main Guard House, with tho news tbut the frail bridge, leading to the bath fog house, had been er. ept away, and bathing house itself, with its owner and his family, who were in it, were in immiueut peril. The news spread like wildlire, and in n short time hundreds of excited Bpeotitors h?"" ? . sembled on tho battery to satisfy tUcmselves as to the truth of tho report. The gale at this time (10 o'clock) was absolutely furious; a terrible hurricane, hurling huge masses of water over the high battery and rolling huge breakers breast high along the South walk. The garden was fully four feet under water, presenting a clear sheet from East to South Battery. But all eyefi wore turned from the scene of devasta? tion immediately around them to a point of more thrilling interest. The bathing house, cut off as it wan from nil communication with tho land, was rocking uu its foundation, and it was at once eeen that every effort must be made, without delay, to rcacuo tho uu fortuuuto inmates. These were Mr. MsMunmon, his wife and two children, und a yonng man who occupied one o! the rooms?. Tho first attempt was made by a uam'uer of colored fishermen and policemen, headed by Mr. H. Nott Parker, the stroke oar of tbo Palmetto boat crew. A yawl boat was procured from the uumberu usually moored around Moreland's Wharf, uud with twenty-five or thirty volanteers, the leaders drugged the long and unxiously looked for boat through the wuter, which was quite sufficient to float bee across, tho garden to the spot imme? diately opposite the bathing house on the South walk. The bridge in its full hud tutu away a considerable por? tion of the masoury, and tho sea soon increased tho reut to a wide gap. This was deemed n favorable point from which to launch tho craft, aud so, witb the hundreds of hands which were now ready aud willing to assist the during spirits iu their perilous venture, the boat wus launched at an opportune moment, and five men, two policemen, two fishermen and Mr. U. N. Parker, threw themselves into her, seized the oars and made strenuous efforts to bead for tho bathing house. A line had been attached to the stern of the yawl to draw her iu to shore iu case of swamping. This pieco of prtcitutiou was the cause of tho tiist luilnre, for the men entrusted with tho rope, when it wus si en by every one that the boat could not he managed with the struin j of the line no her stern, letiuied to let go until the boat hud heeu borne too lui tn leeward, uud nothing was left for the crew out to keep her bow to the breakers and let bar drift, on with tho Mirt and cuiieut. They effected u Unding uud er tho lee of the battery wall without serious difficulty The situation now begou to look desperate. The bathing house t r? -r.l>i. <i tit every fresh gust <?'. wind, unit the mountain like hilluv.s wc.ro hurled um so many butleting rmus with mondlos lapidity against the crumbling foundation. Previous to this the little tug Belief had hove in sight, and her captain made heroic effurta to rescue tho in , unites cd" Ihe rapidly tailing house. 'The little vessel breasted tliu storm gallantly, pitching und rolling in the ! heavy sen to an uiurming extent, and j every time she. made uu actcmpt. to I round to the gain she was ui.-ioih ssiy j heuten huck, und in a short time she ' faded from sight like a phantom ship I in the mi>t ami rain, driven up the j river at a frigutlu speed. The ludure of the tug to relieve the inmates of the i house, uud the Iruitless effort of the i yawl boat crow, tended to increase to u fearful pitch the excitement of the crowd. Ao unusually heavy blast of wind, together with an enormous wave at this time, stovo in the rear portion of tho doomed house, the shattered timbers Bwayed hesitatingly for a mo? ment, and then came down with a crash, strewing the waters fur aud wide with the debris. The inmates who had remained re? markably o?lm and qniet up to this time, now showed unmistakable signs of alarm. Mrs. MoManmou, with her two little children, presented a heart? rending sight, ns they stood at the open window, witb arms outstretched, sup? plicating that relief which it seemed the crowd was powerless to render. The next effort that wus made was to I heave a lino across by means of which the family might bo dragged ashore; nut this, too, proved unavailing, and the lead burled by an arm inured to the task was blown aside like a feather by the ungry wind. The house now rose and Rank with every swell, aud Continued on second page.
