since tho destructive gale of 1854. But

infliction. For over a fortnight tho
wind bad been blowing steadily from
the East, and at times the weather bad
assumed a threatening aspect, but not
sofliciently so to warrant the appre?
hension of a gale. On Sunday even?

sions. At 8 o'clock, it was evident that
tho gale was upon us. The eea wus
heaving and tossing in tho harbor, and
the rapidly encroaching tide began to
flood tin wharves und streets. Tho
squalls kept constantly increusiug iu

port begun to look anxiously to their
moorings. At 0 o'clock, the tido had
risen so high that, it covered all the
.vhtrvea on the Eastern front of the
city and flooded tho streets ro the
depth of several feet. Many of the
wharves were washed up, and several
vessels parted from their moorings and
were driven on sdioic.
The bceue at tho wharves at this
tirao was terrific. Iu every direction
drift-wood, bales of cotton, wrecked

about. The wind, whistling through
tho rigging of the shipping) made me?
lancholy music, and the blinding rain
falling iu torients rendened efforts to
save anything almost useless. The
