SOUTHE UN SECURITIES STRONG AND ACTIVE.-The nnsafe character of rail? way and miscellaneous stocks pending the re-arrangement of vaines on tho gold basis, has diverted considerable attention to the low priced and hitherto compara? tively inactivo bonds of the Southern States. At this time there is also a steady demand from Europe-where it is dif? ficult to make people understand why the securities of these States are not as safe as the bonds of the Confederation. The Louisiana's and Virginia's have, within the first few months, been espe? cial favorites abroad, but the advance in their price has now turned the invest? ment demand to the rest of the list, and to the Alabama's in particular. The five per cents, rose to 72, and the eight per cents, to 98, the latter being >*or a time soaroe below 100. The South Carolina's were the next feature in this activity, the gold bonds being strong at 91. The Virginia's were lower sales to realize the recent remarkable advance. The new Tennessee's were firm and the North Carolina's steady. [New York Herald, Mardi ll. ADVENTURES OF A DIAMOND.-The San oy diamond is for sale at a jeweler's in Calcutta jost now. Here is the acoonnt the jeweler gives of it: "This diamond is of an almond shape, and weighs 60 ?? rnttie. The stone was lonna on the body of the Duke of Burgundy, and was afterwards, in 1470, bonght by the King of Portugal. He afterwards sold it to Nicholas de Barly, Baron de Sancy, from whom it derives its name. Sancy Sent it to the King as a present by the hand of a servant, who being attacked by robbers, swallowed the stone, and after his death the stone was found in his body. It finally came into the hands of James II, of England, who sold it to Louis XIV for ?25,000 Its almond form, completely facetted over (a mode quite unknown then or at any other time in Europo,) indisputably proves that it was an Indian-out stone. In the French revolution it disappeared for some time; some years later it was sold to Prince Paul Demidoff; and now, after a strange series of vicissitudes, finds its way to Calcutta." EXTRAORDINARY SLANDER SUIT.-An extraordinary slander suit has com? menced in New York. The plaintiff, Miss Delia W. Moore, a young lady of twenty-five summers, asks for $5,000 damages against one John S. Bonnell, a young man who goes about telling the world that Miss Moore is his wife. Miss Moore denies that she is married to the defendant or that she ever cohabited with him. Mr. Bonnell, in defence, Kroducea tho records of St. Paul's [ethodist Episcopal Chuch, of that city, upon which it is shown that he was married to the plaintiff by tho late Rev. Dr. Mcclintock, November 2G, 1861. There is evidently a strango mistake somewhere. Bonnell is undoubtedly married to Miss Moore, but it is vory questionable if tho fair prosecutrix is married to Bonnell. NOTICE. COTJUMMA, S. C., January. 1870. Tho Charlotte, Columbia uud Augusta Railroad Company having been formed by the consolidation of the Charlotte and South Carolina and tho Columbia and Augusta Railroad, and having executed a first and only mortgage on its entire property of 195 miles, including equip? ment, is now redeeming all the bonds formerly issued by said two companies by an exchange of its first mortgage bonds. These bonds bear seven per cent, interest, payable iu Jauuary aud July, and are amply secured by a mort? gage on property which cost per mile more than three times the amount of bonds so issued. The present price of the stock and tho business of the road give ample guaran? tee of the security of tho obligations for a permanent iuvestment. Indeed the opinion is freely expressed, that there is no safer bondB issued by auy party or corporation in the State, and they are cheerfully commended to capitalists ns a safe investment.
