GLUE WHICH WIMJ UNITE EVEN Po LISHED STEEL.-A Turkish receipt for a cement used to fasten diamonds and other precious stones to metallic sur? faces, and which is said to unite even surfaces of polished steel, although ex? posed to moisture, is os follows: "Dis? solve five or six bits of gum mastic, eaoh of the* size of a large pea, in as much spirits of wine as will suffice to render it liquid. In another vessel dissolve in brandy as muoh isinglass, previously softened in water, as will make a two ounce vial of strong glue, adding two small bits of gum ammoniac, which must be rubbed until dissolved. Then mix the whole with heat. Keep in a vial closely stopped. When it is to be used, set the vial in boiling water." This is the latest story from Paris : M. Blanc, a millionaire, who came within an ace of being eleoted deputy, was re- ] turning from Burgundy by a night train. A lady, young and pretty, occupied the same compartment. Now M. Blano, who, in t,pito of his naturally small feet, tries to make them smaller still, was suffering terribly from tight boots. All at once he noticed the lady was asleep, and he could just as well takeoff his boots, whioh he did. Suddenly the sta? tion lights begin to appear in sight. One boot is quickly put on, but the other, alas! does not go on so easily. He pulls and pushes; finally the foot goes io, but is terribly pinched. Once at the station, M. Blano hides himself in a cab, and thinks his troubles at an end. When he reaches the house, imagine his surprise at finding his right foot in a lady's boot. The lady had been in a similar situation with himself. Madame Blano refuses to believe a word of his story; she cries, goes into hyste? rics, and finally returns to her father, re? fusing to hold any communication with her unfortunate husband.
