J., jeff! rms th at the following is a erne story, gund can be substantiated by persons now living In that town: Some time ago, a gentleman of considerable wealth in that vicinity, and who was supposed to keep a large sam of money in bis desk, was aroused from sleep at midnight by the sound as of some one forcing open one of the lower doors of his house. Aris? ing qnietly from the bed, and taking a loaded gnu in hand, he softly raised a sash over the door from which tho noise proceeded, and, on looking out, could distinguish the forms of two persons in the thick darkness of the night. To level his weapon and fire was tho work of a moment, but, as both figures fled, the shot seemed to have been wasted. Upon examining the spot in the morning, however, the gentleman found a con? siderable quantity of blood on the trampled grass, and tracks of it for some distance from the house. Soon after, the soil of a grave-yard near the house was found to be disturbed, as though in pre? paration for the removal of a body, and the neighbors resolved the attempted burglary into the wanderings of a couple of would-be "body-snatchers," whom the alarmed house-holder had frightened and grazed by his random shot. Upon this supposition, the excitement gradu aU subsided into a tale for the winter fire-side, and was quoted only by garru? lous old dames and imaginative nurses, ?at time and death have at last bronght Re true solution of the mystery, through the dying confession of a man recently deceased in the village. Although the son of a well-known oitizen, and of good general repute himself, he, in company with a scapegrace comrade, had actually Attempted to perpetrate the robbery, and tho snot fired hud inflicted a mortal Wound upon the comrade. The dying man added that he had borne his bleed? ing comrade to a place of concealment, kept him there while he lived, and then buried him by night in that part of the grave-yard where the disturbance of the Boil had been noticed. It was their first and last attempt at crime, and had been terribly expiated by the speedy death of the one and the life-long remorse of the other. Often complaining of weakness, debility, and low spirits.
