C._ "NOTHING EXTENUATE, NO? SET D O WNA UQHT IN MA LICE. " Wo have, to-day, something to say bj way of doing justice to ourselves anc justieo to truth. As our readers an aware, wo aro tho free, outspoken, de cided opponent of radicalism in its prin eiples nud ita practices. We regard it a inimical to good government, inimical ti national development, and is, therefore tho just object of our steady opposition But this we desire to say, that we have fair recognition of tho difference to b noted between the two forms in whiol it presents itself. There is a radicalisi N'orth nud a radicalism South. There i a radicalism extreme and a radicalisi moderato. We can conceive very wei how, at tho North, a white man may b a radical nud yet bo h ue. It is hard fe ns to conceivo how a Southern whit mun eau ho a radical and yot bo loyal t himself, his family and his section. Bc our object is more particularly to say word in behalf of the moderate radica Xor th, ns well as South. They are \ bo commended for their moderntioi Wo desire to encourage thom. Theyd Herve to bc encouraged. Wo advise the: lo go ou improving, and the more tb< improve tho further they will find then solves from the pince whence they bega io amend. We repeat it, that tho whi mun, in particular, who starts on tl road that lends him away from ''tl league," is a good traveler. // is tc for the white radical South to look to h future. White may yet be a popular colo und in that coming day when things sin again become normal, there will perha; l?e manya maa who will bitterly regr that ho cannot, for tho life of him, g h'm face white again. -*? - TUE COMINO CANVASS.-It is nu o maxim, in which there is much of sour philosophy, "in timo of peace prepa: for war." Tho political campaign fi 1870 is soon toopoo, and tho destinies i a commonwealth are again to be put VJ ?.ii tho prize. When wo contemplate tl i m menso results at stake, is it not big time that the leaders of the Democrat were planning for tho battle, and pr puring to marshal their forces wi: energy and judgment? Let tho pla: bo broad and nu mistakable; lot thom 1 free from mougrelisra, for luto efforts other States show that such can only el in division aud defeat. There is no coi mon ground upon which Democrats ai radicals can meet-there is nothing sympathy betwecu such opposing el munta-their principles aro HS dissimil as tho features and faces that compo their ranks. Let us, then, avoid anythii like hybridism; let ns boldly proclai (ho good old principles of our fut he that held sway in the carly days of tl republic, and make n fair, square ai manly struggle for the victory. In this County tho victory is our ow if wc really wiall it. Wo havo only make a long pull, a strong pull, and null altogether, and wo win beyond doubt, if, however, we havo any d c ord in our ranks, wo are just ns certa to meet with failure mid disgrace. Y must move forward shoulder to shoulde uutl as ono man strike for the master Tho enemy is a solid phalanx, and \ must bo the sumo in opposition. Tl ??ld idea that wo all formerly chorisho I hat this or that friend must be non nated for office, or that the claims of tl or that section of country mint preva must give way to tho necessities of t timoH. We now slrugglo for princip not for meu; and private preferen must yield to the public good. It is or by regular nomination that we can ho for unanimity, and in combined acti ulono can wo hopo for victory. T Homans learned some of their mi valuablo arts of war from their onemi f jot us do the same. Tho oneness our politicnl foe, fomented by ignoran, has boen tho surprise o? tho white mi I'oget her radicals stand or full-th allow no division in their ranks, n here ia tho secret of their success. Let, tin privato wishofi and local influences forgotten in the common good, for th must not bo any division if we woi avoid defeat and consequent disgru AH ono mau, thoo, lot us conduct 1 coming canvass. Y. ) Times say.? : Some timo ago, we published U state? ment to the effect that Miss Gray, a milliner of Fort Edward, had hecoino tho fortunate heir to ?19,000,000, which her lover, ti young Englishman, had willed to her upon his dying bod. The main fact iu tho case, tho hcirship, is , truo, but wo now learn that] it was not to the lover, but to his fattier, that Miss Gray is indebted for her extraordinary good fortune. It sectus the lover, on j his return to England, like too many ; others, proved inconsistant, und married another Indy, against his father's will. Whether it was remorse ut his faithless? ness or from some ot her cause, ceri ai u it is tho youug mun died in about u year after his murringo, and left all his pro? perty to Iiis father. Tho old gontleman j was without heirs, and not having be como reconciled to his daughtor-iu-Iaw, upon his death lett one-half of his pro? perty to the Government of England, nnd tho remaining half, 510,000,000, to Miss Gray, the Fort Edward milliner. , Tho sum was so largo that many people were disposed to doubt its truth when it : first appeared iu print, but Miss Gray '? hus already received the first instalment : of her fortune, a trifle of S?.000,000, from the British Consul in New York. I Ou Tuesday last, she received a despatch from the consul announcing that the ? money awaited her order, and on the i followiug day she left Fort Edward for New York, where ?I was paid over to her. A letter of thc 1 "?til instant from Tar j boro, N\ C., gives the following particu? lars of the execution, nt Tarboro, on Friday last, nf Lewis Hines, colored, for I tho outrage of a young white girl named Sarah L. Johnson, on tho 29th of April last: "When conducted to tho scaffold, . the condemned man made no confession, ! but did not deny his guilt. A deputy Hherifl' then adjusted the rope, but so loosely, that when the criminal was swung off, the knot came beneath his chin. His legs were not pinioned. When i ho fell, he struggled fearfully. Hy ex? traordinary exertion, the suspended man seized hold of the rope nt his throat with one of his hands. He turned round and round, and succeeded in getting his feet back on the platform from which ho hud just boen hurled. Terrible excitement prevailed among thc spectators while the unfortunate wretch was endeavoring to 1 regain his feet ; butas Ibo stern decree ! of tho law had to be carried out, the i sheriff rushed upon the scnffold and pushed tho dinging feet of thc wretch norn the edge of the platform. He then continued swinging foraevenloen minute a when life was declared extinct. The mun was strangulated."' . . . SINGULAR CAUSE OF DEATH.- -Men . sometimes dio from very singular cause.". A blacksmith in Monticello, N. Y., re? cently put a couimou wooden axle in his tire to loosen the iron "thimble" from its outer edge, when to his astonishment it blew up, shooting jagged splinters into his body. Death ensued, lt happened thus: The broken axle had been lying out in tho rain for some time, and was ' pretty thoroughly saturated with water. There is frequently a considerable cavity between the thimble and tho end of the axle. Tho water had rusted the holt screw at tho head of tho thimble so as to render it perfectly tight, and thc swell? ing of the wood had produced a similar effect nt the other end. When the mois? ture in the chamber had turned to steam, and afterward to gas iu tho intonso heat, an explosion was the natural result.
