The great naturul curiosity known as Hauken Lako is situated iu tho Cascade Mountains, about seventy-live mile? North-east of Jacksonville, Oregon. The walls uro 2,000 feet high, und almost perpendicular, running down into tho water, and lenviug uo beach. 1418 depth is unknown, the surfaco is smooth und nurutlled, nud it lies so far below the surface of the mountain that the air currents do not affect it. Its length ii estimated at twelve miles, and its breadth at ten. No liviug mau hus, it is said, over reached tho water's edge. The lake lies "silent, still ?nd mysteri? ous, in the bosom of tho everlasting hills, like a huge well scooped out by tho hands of genii."
