Some timo ago, we published U state?

her lover, ti young Englishman, had
willed to her upon his dying bod. The
main fact iu tho case, tho hcirship, is

to the lover, but to his fattier, that Miss
Gray is indebted for her extraordinary
good fortune. It sectus the lover, on

another Indy, against his father's will.
Whether it was remorse ut his faithless?

Miss Gray, the Fort Edward milliner.
, Tho sum was so largo that many people
were disposed to doubt its truth when it

from the British Consul in New York.
I Ou Tuesday last, she received a despatch

A letter of thc 1 "?til instant from Tar

last: "When conducted to tho scaffold,
. the condemned man made no confession,

Hherifl' then adjusted the rope, but so
loosely, that when the criminal was
swung off, the knot came beneath his
chin. His legs were not pinioned. When
i ho fell, he struggled fearfully. Hy ex?
traordinary exertion, the suspended man
seized hold of the rope nt his throat with
one of his hands. He turned round and
round, and succeeded in getting his feet
back on the platform from which ho hud
just boen hurled. Terrible excitement
prevailed among thc spectators while the
unfortunate wretch was endeavoring to

A blacksmith in Monticello, N. Y., re?
cently put a couimou wooden axle in his
tire to loosen the iron "thimble" from its
outer edge, when to his astonishment it
blew up, shooting jagged splinters into
his body. Death ensued, lt happened
thus: The broken axle had been lying
out in tho rain for some time, and was
' pretty thoroughly saturated with water.
There is frequently a considerable cavity
between the thimble and tho end of the
axle. Tho water had rusted the holt
screw at tho head of tho thimble so as to
render it perfectly tight, and thc swell?
ing of the wood had produced a similar
effect nt the other end. When the mois?
ture in the chamber had turned to steam,
and afterward to gas iu tho intonso heat,
an explosion was the natural result.
