Dick? ens has not resigned this peaceful mission. Nothing could be in better taste and feeling than bia hearty speech at the banquet on Mon? day evening. His wide and intimate knowledge of hi8 countrymen enabled him to express the admiration and esteem which the Harvard men have won for themselves in England. We hope there will be a return match in America, and feel confident that Oxford will meet as brotherly a welcome there as Harvard has here. We rejoice that our kinsmen ave satisfied with the arrangements of the race; we trust that for all time there may be no other or less thin a goDorous rivalry between the pride and flower of Old and Now Entrland. To errors of impetuosity and impatience rowing authorities attribute the d?f-;at. These are tho excess of qualitios of an old stock-the temperament of a people's youth. What may not au alliance of two such rivals do for the better future of tho world ?" i CHARLESTON. SATURDAY MOBNINO, SEPT. 4, 1869. Thc Ku-Klux-Klan. About twelve months ago the Presiden? tial eleotion was drawing nigh, and all good Radicals busied themselves in devising a tale of rebel horror whioh might terrify the sober-sides of the North into voting for Grant-the Man of Peaoe. With an indus? try whioh gave honorable proof that they had not exhausted all their strength in ct n triving means of growing rapidly rici-, tba South Carolina Badioals rolled out yard after yard of "rebel murders" and "rebel "atrocities," and by the time that the elec tiona were at band at least two miles of printed lies had been scattered over the Union. Our Ohio Governor wa saot back? ward in coming forward in his p?culiar line/and rolled out a soore of letters and proclamations to prove that the South Car? olina Denftoraoy were on the point of swal? lowing, without salt, R. E Soott and the universal Yankee, nation. The South Car? olina rebels were not yet ready to make a meal of the white Radical?; but our weak kneed Governor was badly soared, all the same, believing that hts ears and hide, as well as carpet bag, were in imminent dan? ger. As Scott raved, our people laughed ha ! ha ! The more Scott -rayed the more they cracked their sides But not until the elections were over, did the Ohio Governor cease bis cries. Thea, at last, peaoe was permitted to reign throughout the laud. For many mouths we have been allowed to remain quiet. There is, however, some danger that the Radicals may be flung in Pennsylvania and-horrible to say !-in Ohio. Aud now does the Rtdical ohieftain couch his pen and amble to the rescue From his orest wave bonds and bills, and on his asure shield is a pouch Or-false her atdry, but true carpet baggery. Strange to say, he does not himself enter the lists, gaily caparisoned though he be. The King of the Carpet baggers has for his best friend a New Eogland skip jack, who is allowed to use all the weapons in the armory of his lord. Well ! the one-sided combat has begun, and the New Englander oalls to his aid the old familiars-Ku Klux and Bug a Boo who did good eervioe a few months ago This time they oome in a aew dress, appear ing as the heroes of miracle plays, in whioh are shown the "vices of the rebel" uni "the "virtue of the o tr pet bigger." Oae of these plays oatne off but two days siaoe. t? hort it is, but strong. Thus : K. K. K. OB. NIMBLE NI'-K OF NEWBER HY. Adi. Scene 1. An Ola Field. These two miracle plays, with TAriauooj, ' form the whole stock in trade of the King of the Carpet-baggers and the ekip jack New li G glan Jere. There are bat two dishes of horrors, and upon these the Radicals must feast daily; now roast, now boiled, now broiled, now fried, now stewed. This is not fair on the part of New England. The same ingenuity which at home gare the world wooden nutmegs, Feejee Mermaids and the Wooley Horse, onght to be able to give the South Carolina Radicals something fresher than these eternal variations on Nimble Nick of Newberry and the Ku-Klux Klan. THIT. have bright - Radioals in Union County. The Unionville Times says that H. W. Danoan, the Radioal senator from Union, also oensaa-taker and magistrate, has filled out a model subpoena. It is head? ed ?ani?n County" and addressed to "any Lawful officer." The witness is summoned to appear at the "our often ock" in a cer? tain case in which "the Townconcil oon serad Plaintiff, againtt is 8. W. Dapree De? fendant; is Townconcil." The "italics in the last sentence indicate printed words in the blank. This is equal rights in orthography ! THE Unionville Times says : "In our State "canvass, we beg the Phoenix and THE "CHABLISTON NIWS to let alone such barren "questions as free trade, protective tariffs "and uniform ourrency. Let them alone "until our greatest evil is removed." We reply that THK CHARLESTON NBWS has never attempted to make these questions the turning point in our State oanraas. The platform of this paper, in all State questions, is ANTI RADICALISM, pure and simple. IN ANSWER to a correspondent we beg to say that we presume that the authority of j the Treasurer of Colleton County "to col elect a capitation tax" is given him by sec? tion 43 of the Tax law, which is as follows : "There shall be assessed on all taxable polls in the State an annual tax of one dollar on each poll, the proceeds of which tax shall be applied solely to ecucatiooal purposes." THE Radioal rumor that there was dan? ger of au outbreak in Anderson is, as we supposed, wholly false. The Intelligencer says there has been no breach of the peace and no disturbance, beyond what was oaused by the howling of drunken negroes during tho session of the Investigating Committee. OUR Collei on correspondent reports that three murders by negroes bata taken place in a short time, and that there have been three incendiary fires in Walterboro* in one week. Perhaps the Radioals will oall these Democratic outragea I TEE Phoenix says : "The buildings which " the City Council are preparing for the M ooming fair are in course of rapid oon " .traotion.
