Governor Scott's reward of two hundred dol? lars for Jeffrey Myora, one of the murderers, oiused a laughable scono near Jaoka' nboro* a few days ago. A negro possessing the Bog Restive name of Jim Enfield, was going along tho railroad with an Enfield nfle when he dis? covered a strange negro asleep. Jim conolu ded at onco it was tbe dreaded ' Jeffrey." Dis? cretion whispered Jim to give him a wide berth, but a vision of two hnndred creen ono dollar bills seemed to shot ont foar from bis mortal vision, and ho had tho temerity to punch tho supposed tolon with bis gna. The Bleeper awoke, having worried himself to s'oop thinking how ho could catch Jeffrey and get the two hnndred. Finding a strange negro standing over him, be conclnded that Jim waa Jeffrey and that bo was a gone nigger. So at lt they went just for tbe pos-ICHsk n of the gan, and then of conreo . ach other-tbe struggle was desperate until. tbo rifle was fired in tue air; then using the nflo, not as a weapon of offen co, ont a grappling iron, they held each end and met in tho moat terriflo buts. If it bad not been a physical 1m poesibilitj, brainB wonld have been spilt; but tho .most stunning collisions only sent each one back to the respoctive end of tbo rifle, 'till Jim was reinforced by bis mother, armed with a frying pan, who forthwith commenced to persuade the supposed Jeffrey to surrender by gentle admonitions over tho bead and boo, which only had the effect of making white marks where- the sooty pan would strike. At length a fourth party arrived on the ground who knew both parties, inquired what they were fighting for, and found each thought tho othor was Jeflroj, and was "righton for do 'ward." . - Three fires have occurred In the Town of Waitorboro' ia one vro.-k, two of them, ii not all, known to be the work of an incendiary. TUE AS U VIL It E RAILROAD. What the Country Preaa hove to Saay. Tho following articles show itio interest with which tho country pross rogard tho proposed railroad from Bpartanburg lo Ashville : ASH VILLE RAILROAD. [From the Hpartanburg Gazette.] We copy an editorial, which recently ap? peared in Tan CHABLESTON MEWS, on tho ex? tension of tho Hpartanburg and Union Railroad to Ashville, North . Carolina. Wo insert it only to show to our roaders tbal tho pooplo of CharloBton and of tho lower country aro awak? ening toasooBo ot tho gieat importance of thia exton ion, to tbo interest H of tue State at largo, and of Charleston in particular. iVe are firmly convinoed that tbo building of thia road would add more to thc material in te ree ta of tho State than would tho completion of any other projected enterprise. It Will be emphatically a State Road, and should roooivo Stalo support. Whilo wo favor Ibo building of tho Blue Ridgo rokd, yet we believe that dircot communica? tion can be bad botwoon Cincinnati and our seaboard, by tho Ashville route, beforo a tunnel can bo bored through the monutains for the Blue Ridge Road. THE ASHVILLE CONNECTION. (From the Union Times.] Wo copy with pleaauro from THE CHARLES? TON MEWS a short articlo on this subject. Wo boliovo tli nt there is no railroad project now in contemplation of more vital importance to Charleaton and South Carolina. This road must be speedily built. And tho proper way to coromonco ia to commence it homo. Uniou and Spartanbnrg, and thc counties in North Carolina through which the road will pass, co.nld and should raise five hundred thousand dollars. Riiso that amount along Ibo lino of the road, and the road will assuredly bo built. Tho first spike driven on this extonsion wilt increase tho prico ot land within ton milet- of tho railroad, from Alston to the North Caro? lina-lino, at loast one dollar per aero, ou an average; a total ot over one million dollars. lt is lust oui or those roads in which a man may take stock largely; with a certainty of its being a paying invoatmont, without reference to dividends. .Tho increase in.valuo of bis lands, and a corresponding depreciation of twenty-five per cent, in the prico of bacon, IF rd, corn and Western produce generally, are dividends enough. But the road, when built, most do a large amount of business, and ac? cumulate every year a heavy net onrplue for distribution among stockholders. THE ASHVILLE riAILHOD. . . I From the Carolina Spartan.] Weare g tad to see that THE CH ABLESTON NEWS ia beginning to notice and ackoowlege tho advantages of the French Broad Railroad route, and that its cost will not be near BO groat as that of tbe Bine Ridgo rou to. Tbe advantages of tbe French Broad ronlo over any other have beon BO long and thoroughly diso lated as to render lt useless to do more than keep tho subject before tho publio mind, that they may not forget the facts that bave been so thoroughly demonstrated as regards the benefits, and really tho aotual necessity of the extension ot the Spartanbng and Union Road through to Ashville, North Carolina, thoa completing the gap in the great Charleston and Cincinnati Road. That the claims of this route over those of any other are numerous and pressing, any un? prejudiced mind will admit. These claims do not ariao alono from the cheapness of the route as.compared with others- though this ia great and sufficient to glvo lt prefer? ence-but also tbe security which ita comple? tion will afford to tbo commercial interests ol the State, in which tbe City pf Charleston is sc directly interested. This road'once complet? ed, its natural advantages in location, and its direotnesB from tha seaboard to Louisville Cincinnati and the great Northwest, will se? cure it against any competition from othej routes direoted to tba same points, or against divergent linea touching At any other point or the seaboard than Charleston. The laws ol trade are inflexible, and freight and travel wil always seek the shortest rente to a oommeroU mart because it ia cheapest and moat exped? tiona. This is the great/ reason why the peopli of Charleston should advocate this route, aa i affords thc most turee ta, rid cheapest connect lng line between that city and the great North west, thereby . increasing the population wealth, and commercial importance of our cit; by tho sea. Thus io proportion the benefit will be felt and dispensed along tbo entir rooteaa it roaches its greatness as a thorough fare of trade abd travel." Charleston ?s un mind ful of her own interests when she advo oaten a less direot Uno to tbe West, lt is use less in these days to talk of the many conn nienoos, publio a?d social, which would be de rived from thc extension of thia toad. Th prominent facts in the matter bavo been to often placed before the public not to be undei stood. It we, the people of Spartanbnrg, ha no oiber motive than the?interest of Charlot top, onr commercial capital, we wonld adre cate the extension of this road through t Ashville. .
