Immediately after the delivery of the fore? going reply, President McCabe had an inter-, view with the Mayor, at which Alderman T. J. Mackey, the Chief of Police and Lieutenant Taft were present. Mayor Pillsbury said that he was perfeotly satisfied with President McCabe's lotter, and would do all tbat he could to make the visit of the Savannah Club pass off pleasantly. Ia compliance with a request made by President McCabe, tbs Mayor then ordered Captain Hendricks, chief of polioe, to dose all the streets in the immediate neighborhood of the playground, except Tradd-street. This was done in order that the gr jnnd might be staked off. Aiaorm.ii x'. J. Mackey then suggested that the polioe on duty at the ground bo armed with their Winches t or rifles. Tho Mayor asked President McCabe whether he thought this would be advisable. President McCabe said that as president of the Carolina Base Ball Club he could not give any opinion on the sub? ject, but, ss a citizen, he would say that the arming of the police would have a good moral effect; and tend to prevent trouble. The Mayor then said that the squad of police on duty should be armed and be under the orders of President McCabe, or of the committee of ar? rangements, as he might prefer. They will be stationed along the ropes, and no one will be allowed inside the ropes without the permis? sion of the committee of arrangements. The Mayor made it understood in thu course of the interview that he was determined to preserve the peace if it could be dose, and if wa8 any riot it oula b* oirushed ont at once. AB*?HfSEMENT? August 18, 1869.-For the last two days tho quiet little Town of Beaufort baa been in quite a state of ex? citement, occasioned bj the presenoe of a large uumber of "railroad men," and fctooks and bonds hare been the only things talked about, and ''Amt it pleasant riding on a rail," the only tune vhisiled or snng. On Wednesday morning the first meeting was held in the A''rican Methodist Church S. C. Millett, Esq., (president of the Port Bor? al Railroad Company, ) presiding; W. O.Bel lows, secretary. To give a report of the discussions had (sometimes stormy,) of tbe resolutions pro? posed, adopted sad not adopted, the feasible and unfeasible plana brought forward, and either summarily voted down or entertained, would not only be loi heavy a tax upon the patience of the readers of THB NEWS, but ?rmiid also oe too lengthy for even its ample columns; so we will only give tho result of the several meetings held on Wednesday and Thursday, the last one concluding late Thursday night. Among the directors present were Mosers. Willingham, Polli'zer, Cook, Elliott, La vton. People* and Steuart. Four thousand shares of stock wore represented. It was deoidod that thc terminus of tho road should be upon the nor.h side of Broad Biver and within five mile J of Beaufort-the pArticu? lar locality to be determined by the Looating Engineers; and that the contract for complet? ing the road should ba given to Mr. J. P. Flannigan, of New York, who for the sum of four million seven hundred thousand dollars ($4,7011,000 ) to bo paid m stocks and bonds ot the road, pledges himself to complete it by next August. It is the general impression that the ter? minus of tho road will be at Smith's planta? tion on Beaufott Biver. four and a half miles below beaufort, where there ls twenty feet water at the bank at medium tide. BBAUFOBT, A town of twenty-tire huudred inhabitants, is a very quiet pl&oe at present, and presents none of that liveliness, wealth and gayety for which it was noted, and deservedly so. before the war. There is eighteen feet water at the wharves at medium tide, sod the inhabitant? thought this fact m itself a sufficient, reason for having the ter alnas of the Port Boyal Bail road here, but it has been determined that it shall be only a way station. Tot the inhabi? tants are not at all despondent, and anticipate good results from the completion of the road, as many enterprises, which are now in embryo, will be born in the town simultaneously with its opening. On the plantations around Beaufort, and on the sea. islands between Charleston and that place, we learn from the planters that the crops are good, With plenty of caterpillars, which, however, are not doing very moo h harm. The universal complaint is that the negroes won't work; that good wages will not tempt them to do it, and there is more injury to be feared to tbe crops from lack of bands to at? tend to them than from any other cause. Tho negroes employ two days of the week in fishing, and oatoh enough shrimps, and fish to get pro? visions to last them the remaining days of tbe week, during which ' they sleep. One day last "week a nepro woman heavy with child, walked five miles from Beaufort to a planter and Asked him to gire her ?ork. As it was late in the day he refused, but on hei stating that she wanted to earn ten cents tc buy biscuits with, he oona mted, sod the woman worked just long enough to earn ten cents quit, walked back to town, bought tbe bisouitl and was happy.
