The position of Surat cotton we consider aa relatively not so strong as American; there will be also a serious deficiency in it, but the pro? portionate contraction of consumption will not need to oe nearly so great as in long stapled cotton. We moline, therefore, to think that the present difference ot price between Ameri? can and Surat cotton will increase as the sea eon advanoes. With regari to the growing American crop, we are happy to report favorably. The weather has. been good Abe past two months, and has nearly' repaired the injury done by a cold and backward spring; still the crop is later than the last one, and has yet to pass through a critical time; so that it is quite premature to hazard estimates of yield. The area planted is be? lieved to be hvrsrer than last year, bat the labor available no greater; there has been, however, an abundant use of fertilizers, which may in? crease tbe product, even where the labor em? ployed is no greater However the cotton question is viewed, the prospects in tbe immediate future are melan? choly for the consumer, and it cannot be doubt? ed that during the coming wmt er, if not before then, a vast amount of machinery must be stopped m Lancashire.
