To day the party of gentlemen, who three weeks ago were pelted through our streets by au infuriated mob of negroes, will revisit Charleston by sp-otal invitation. They will oome as the honored guests of oar people, and we trust that the warmth of their re seption now will be suoh as to eff toe forever the reoolleoiion of the disgraceful sesnes which attended their recent viait. It would be affectation, however, to ignore the fact that certain turbulent negroes among us openly threaten a repetition of the riotous assault upon our Sovan nah guests. We need hardly add that the white men of this city are in no mood to endure this fresh ignominy. Every consideration of honer and of inter? est, of duty and of deeency, wonld forbid it. It may be that Mayor Pillsbury mesa-, tHis time, to do his whole duty. The polios may, and, we hop?, will bs able and willina; to enforoe order ajad maintain the publio peace. A feW days ago the Macon Telegraph, doubtless with the purest motives, publish ed an article in whieh it. was stated that the crops in South Carolina had almost en? tirely failed, and that a famine was expect? ed; that a large part of this State was tin inhabitable by the whites, who were fleeing from the wrath to erne; and, lastly, that the prospects were that the lower and tide? water sections would bs abandoned to the negroes and relapse into wilderness and barbarism. Felix Werner, a professor in a German University, learns from an old book whiob comes by obanoe into his possession that a complete copy of the Annals of Tacitus was in existence in 1687, when it was hidden by a monk to save it from the "Swedish boors." The search for this ?'Lost Manuscript" is the motive of the book before us, whiob, though somewhat long, ia more than oom monly interesting. The characters are well marked. They are not all made in the same mould, plunging and duoking like puppets Whenever the string is pulled. They move and sp'xfc like men and women, who are not all sinuer or all saint. And in this work, we are glad to say it, there is nothing whatever of the horrible or grotesque. The incidents succeed each other naturally, and while there is no elaborate plot-as there ?B no elaborate plot in ordinary life-the at tenti(r% will hardly flag from the first page to the last. The descriptions of German life-in the Tillage, in the castle, and iu the university-are bright and pic ureaque, md there ia a quiet philosophical spirit per? vading the whole, which gives the "Lost Manuscript" a real though intangible charm, and makes it, in truth, a pleasant book to read in the quiet Bummer days.
