Nsw ELEVATOR.-On Saturday last Mr. Ar? chibald McLeisb (builder of Scott's patent ele rater) completed an elevator for the business house of Mr. H. Balwinkle, No. 94 East Bay, which has three stories and a cellar. The ele? vator was put up in the short space ot '.bree days. It will sustain a weight of 25.0 pounds. One man can aaoend witb fire baodred pounds with ease, and can take one thoasand without any great exertion. It can be worked to great advantage by three men, one man travelling on the platform, always being present to load and unload, the three men thus perta ming the labor or four men. The apparatus com? bines'power, tpeod, convenienca and safety. THE REPORTS or ORDNANCE FRIDAY NIGHT vere not, as was generally suppose J, from a ship in distress, but ware occasioned by ne? groes bursting old shells on Morns' Island. They are in the habit of gitbering a number of shells and burying them in tho ground. They then build a fire over the spot, which heats the shells through and causes them to explode. The fragments are gathered up and sold as "old non." Tue shells exploding one af tea another in q tick succession, sounds very much like the rapid tiring of gnus, and lead? to the belief that a vessel is in distress, and is firing to attract assistance to her. Measures should be taken to stop this dangerous amuse? ment among the negroes. DEBOW'S REVIEW.-'1 he July number of this standard magazine contains a number of in? teresting articles upon the educational, scien? tific, social, mechanical and industria, ques? tions of tho day. lu Articles tho introduc? tion of Asiatic labor into the South is strongly opposed, but the antidote is found in Article 8, where the Asiatic is spoken of as "moderato in his diet, coining and desires, firm in his religious belief, subject to few diseases and long lived, a patient, willing, ingenious, and untiring laborer," and where tho prediction is made, that uud>r Asiatic culture tue South will of come free; eminent as an agricultural country. DeBow's Review is well know n in theSjuth, aud we eau reco:nruond it as a pub? lication of great interest aid value to the Southern people. COELZCTOB CLARK'.' SEIZUBE or THE CUS? Thc Hatband of the .Harried Woman who waa Sloped with Soddenly Kc. tarns and < o nf ra nt ? the o e stro ycr of his Happiness and Gets Badly Boat? en-A Mixed ap Affair-Testimony. The incidents connected with the late elope? ment and return of R chard Murphy ara too fresh in the minds of oar readers to need evon a mere mention, and we ?ill only sta to by way of explanation to what follows, that the yoong worn m witb whom he eloped was the wife of William Kerr, a sailor, who not long since .vent oa a cruise. RETURN OF THE INJURED HUSBAND. Late Sunday afternoon Wm. Kerr arrived on the vessel he bad shipped on, and. to his in? tenso horror, heard of tbe conduct of the wo? man whom be had vowed to love, cherish and protact, and bad faithfully kept his vow. Ear? ly yesterday morning bo went to the house of Harry May, on Qieen-atreet, where he leal ned Murphy was. Ace JStine Murphy, be demand? ed his wife. Words and a fight ensued, dur? ing which Kerr was badly beaten. AB BEST OP MURPHY. Shortly after the affair at May's boase, Kerr went to Justice Mackey and had a warrant is? sued for the arrest of Ma- a: d Murphy, charg? ing them with having committed au aggra? vated assault and battery upon him. Hts face certainly bore cvidouces of haviug suffered severely. Officers Coates and Quinn notified the accused to oome around to the Detective Offioo, which they did in a very short time after receiving the not ice. Justice Mackey here held couit. TESTIMONY. The testimony was very conflicting, and we give bolow, substantially, that of eaoh witness: Harry Mays testified that Kerr came into his house wi o o Murphy was and demanded bis wife. He thou challenged Murphy to fight "fist fight,'* whioh be refused to do, as he also refused to fight with knives and pistols, as afterwards requested to do by Kerr, Kerr all of the time having hts hands in bis pocket. Suddenly, during the conversation which en? sued, Kerr drew his pistol and tired at Murphy, who had struck him, the ball, as wilnees testi? fied, going through bis hat, (a bole in wbicb he showed, but it was very much unlike a hole made by a pistol bail.) Witness, then took Kerr's pistol away and threw it into fhe back yard. Mrs. May testified that Kerr had come in as her husband stated and challenged Murphy to fight, bnt be refused. Kerr then called her names and Murphy struck bim, and a general row ensued. Sbe knew a pistol was fired off by Kerr, but how many times she was not able to say. Wm. Kerr testified that be had gone to May's bouse to eoe Murphy about his wife, and had challenged bun to fight, but he would not. Mrs. Kerr then called his wife a bad name and he retorted, whereupon he was set upon by Murphy, who beat bim while May held his arms. He bad a pistol in his pocket, but was unable to draw it because May held him too tight. During this testinony Murphy treated the court with great contempt by muttering threats against Mr. Jobn A. Moroso, who had volun? teered as compel for Kerr, and others in the courtroom, and the Ju uic o ordered him to jail for contempt of c :nrt But fijding that Mur? phy could not then turnisb proper security for his appearance for trial, and would therefore have to go to jail anyhow, be withdrew the commitment for contempt, and sent him to jail in ohargo of Officers Quinn and Levy, in de? fault of said security. May wau discharged. After remaining confined an hour or two, Murphy furnished security and was released. Daring these proceedings Murphy sued out a warrant against Kerr, charging bim with having assaulted him with a deadly weapon. Justice Minot, who issued the warrant, heard the evidence, and required bim to give $300 security to appear for trial.
