A New Orl?<- Journal of Medicine. We have received the April number of this excellent journal, and find it filled, as usual, with varied and interesting matter, original and selected. 'Among the editors we recognize Drs. Samuel Logan and Wm. Hut8on Ford, late of Charleston, and among the contributors ia the present num? ber, Dr. IV. Fraser M ich ol, of Montgomery, Ala., -also one of our former townsmen. Dr. Joseph Jones, formerly of Georgia, uow Professor of Chemistry, in the University of Louisiana, continues his observations on Hospital Gangrene, as it manifested itself in the Confederate armies. This paper was ! originally prepared by Dr. Jones, at An- ! derseuviUe, by order of the Confederate Surgeon-General, Dr. S. P. Moore, and gives proof of great and laborious research. Dr. Jones came near losing his life in pur? suing these investigations, for "Weeks, in a most pestiferous atmosphere. A very inter? esting letter is published ia this number from Dr. F. M. Peterson, aa intelligent, and experienced practitioner, sojourning for a period in New York. He gives aa epitome of the latest novelties in the prac? tice of medicino ; some of which, to say the least, are very surprisiug to the uninitiated layman. If we had not the fear of the pro? fession before our eyes, we should be tempted to quote from this letter, and show how the New York doctors discard all med? icine ia treating pneumonia. " The oaly remedy," says the letter, " used is aa oil ?ilk jacket, over the whole chest, aa teri orly and posteriorly-^applied to the surface of the body," &o., &o. The same letter also ioforms us that Dr. Joha W. Draper and his two sous, John C. and Hoary Draper, (all* three professors ia the New York Univer? sity Medical College,) have discovered that the vital principle is a mere myth, that, every phenomenon, heretofore accounted for by vital notion, secretion, excretion, circula? tion, is now referred to chemical action.
