H. Clarke, A. C. Tucker, et al, was resumed nnd concluded, Mr. John Bacon delivering the argument in reply. The two cases of E. A. Searles, adr. ads. J. P. Blackwell, et ux et al, and C. A. Searles, guar? dian, ads. Susan Searles, were takenup to gether. General McGowan read his brief, and was heard for the motion. Mr. John Bacon contra, and Mr. J. Abney in reply. By a ruse in not giving notice, the Republi? cans of this (Richland) district, attempted to carry the township elections to-day; but some of the public -spirited citizens promptly inter? fered, and the ejection was stopped. It will be held at some rature day, ot which due notice will be given. EUROPE. CASE OF WOUNDED IN ?TSIE OF WAR. BERLIN, April 24.-King William yesterday received a deputation of persons who had vol? unteered to cj.ro for the wounded in case of war. The King congratulated them upon their humane undertaking, and sincerely hoped for tavorable results from it. He thought,- how? ever-thai the obied of their association was apparently distant ; but said, if war should break oat he boped that merited success would crown their efforts. ABOLITION OF THE DEATH PENALTY. FLORENCE, April 2L-The Court of Appeals, which bas had the penal code under considera? tion for smie time, has concluded its examina? tion, and the judges have unanimously agreed upon the abolition of the death penalty. HARIXE DISASTERS. NEW ORLEANS, April 27.-The steamer Lizzie Hopkins, from Shreveport for New Orleans, took fire on the 22d instant among the cotton^ stowed in her hold. She was Ba ved with diffi? culty ty partially filling ber with water. She arrived this evening slightly damaged. One hundred and fifty bales of cotton were thrown overboard. GALVESTON, April 27.-The Norwegian bark Nardcap, from Liverpool with three thousand ea:ks salt, struck while crossing the outer bar yesterday and lodged until three o'clock this morning, when she drifted on the south breaos, bilged and is now full ot water. The vessel and cargo will be a total loss. The schooner Mary D. Ireland, ashore off Pelican Spit since the 17tb, has filled to her hatches. About one-half her oar.ro will be saved; the balance with tho vessel will be a total loss. SPARKS FROM THE WIRES. The fire at the Gold Hill Mines, Nevada, con? tinues, and five hundred men are out of em? ployment in consequence. Colonel John W. Forney and parly arrived in "Wilmington, N. C., yesterday afternoon, and put up at the Purcell House. They will leave at 5 A. M. to-day for Charleston. Francis W. Goddard, late Captain of Carbi? neers, in the First Rhode Island Regiment, by a card in the New York papers, pronounces Sprague a liar, calumniator and poltroon. fl a vre ty, who was imprisoned by General Reynolds, in Texas, and released by General Hancock, now that Reynolds has been reinsta? ted in the command, has been sent back to Jail. -The shooting of a crocodile was a work of much trouble to the Prince of Wales. The touriste up the Nile generally keep up a con? tinuous firing upon mese reptiles, and they have learned to be shy and wily. Still they were seen in considerable numbers-some? times four or five together. It was. no very eapy mattor to get near, not because their sense of smell is as acute as that of a deer at least, and that the sight 19 supposed tobe keen, but that the heat on the sandbanks which they frequented was so fatiguing and oppressive that on one occasion a couple of tourists who were lying in wait for the croco diles coming out of the water, were unable to raise their rifles and fire when the expected event occurred. To lie on sand heated like the ref uso of a glass house, in a sun which sent up the thermom? eter to 190 degrees, is certainly an amns.ment which can only be rendered bearable by a keen lev? of Bport. One lucky day, however, five crocodiles were observed. They slunk off as the steamer came up and disappeared in the river. The flotilla hali ed, and after a time three crocodiles came out asrain and lay out to | j bask in tho sun. Ti.? Prince lar-'id, attended by Sir S. Baker, and after a lon^ .ad exciting crawl over the sandbank, which was visible from the deck, got close enough to get a shot. His Royal Highness took so true an aim that the ball, entering the skull, killed the animal on the spot. It rolled over on its side, but Sir Samuel Baker, to make assurance doubly sure, ran forward and sent another bullet through the neck. The crocodile measured nine feet two inches in length, and an inch under four feet in circumference. -Here is what a French journalist says about an interview he receutly had with Cardinal An tonelli : "His Excellency, Cardinal AntoneUi, has no aote-cbambe-r; as soon as you have been shown into his room, he comes to you, cordially holds out bis hand to you, whether you are known to him or not, and bays to you in vour own language, no matter whether you are a Huron or a Hottentot, 40h, my dear sir, how happy I am to see you.' [FROM OUR 0WX CORRESPONDES!.] COLUMBIA, S. C., April 26.-The indications are that the Agricultural Convention, to meet in thia city on Wednesday, will be a grand sr > coss. The new hotel on Main-Btreet will also he well filled, and Colum? bia expects to reap a good harvest during the continuance of [the . convention. Crowds of stockholders of the Greenville and Colum? bia Railroad are expected here to-mor? row, to be present at the annual meet? ing, and it is said that nearly all will bring their families. The South Carolina Railroad Company haye generously come to the assistance ot the first named company, and given them the use of several of their fine pas? senger cars for tho accommodation of the crowds expected from the up-country. Many of the stockholders are also delegates to tho convention. I have heard of no definite pro? gramme, but the feeling of the up-country farmers and planters seems to be for such con? sultation and action that will bring about har? monious relations and good will between the employers and employees, and the inaugura? tion of some general policy to meet the wants of the State in the progressive tendency to? wards moro extended cultivation of small farms. The movement to inaugurate a third or na? tive Republican party seems to have been nipped very suddenly in the bud. The disap? pointed have been satisfied, and have returned to their homes. The Radical politicians here are as keen and cool on these subjects as the Northern air which most of them breathed while learning their first political lessons. The offices, they promise, shall bo distributed equally hereafter, and noue but Republicans are to be appointed. The contract for fitting up the New State House bas been awarded to Mr. James M. Al- i len, senator from Greenville. The following estimates were received : James G. Bell, $28, MO; C. Waring, $22,000; H. F. Farmer & Co., ?2,000; P. B. Fowlo, $20,000; James M. Allen, 516,500. Senator Hoyt, of Colleton, has been appointed superintendent of tue work, which, according to contract, is to commence on the Qr et of May. It has been decided in a recent case that all commissions tor magistrates and notaries pub? lic taken out previous to the ratification of the constitution, were vacated by it, and are consequently of no effect. All acts done under juch commissions have boen pronounced ille? gal and void. The only legal magistrates are dioso who have taken out commissions under :he present State Government. ?
