HENRY TncBOD, ESQ.-The numerous friends of this poet will regret to learn of his recent illness; bat will eche the wish of the Columbia Chronc'ie, that he may be soon restored to health. The Chronicle says : "Our readers will regret to learn that this sweet poet-the laureate of the South-is now prostrate on a bed of sickness. Severe hemorrages of a dan? gerous character have laid him down, ont we hope ere long that gentle nursing will restore him once more to his accustomed health and haunts." TBS MILLS HOUSE LITERARY STAND.-We are in? debted to Mr. DE LACEY, of the Mill? House stand, for the latest Northern periodicals. His tables are always covered with choice literature, and the visitor can obtain magazines or journals from any portion of the civilized world. The stand is ad? mirably located for the public convenience, and is patronized not only by the guests of tho Mills Boose, but by many patties outside, who aro tempted by the inviting display that is made to divest their spat? change. -o OUR MANUIACTI.RING f s ? EHKSTH.-We are pleas? ed to note that notwithstanding the death of Mr. Wit. GREGG, Sr., the iiranitville factory is con? ducted vigorously, and is preparing to do an ex? tensive business. HICKMAN, Treasurer of the Granitvillo Man? ufacturing Company. The price paid was 20? cents. The sale, taking all things into consideration, was thought to be an excellent one. THE EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENT OF DB. MY? ERS.-By reference to our advertising columns it will be seen that Dr. MYERS, the Principal of the large educational institute in Bull street, has, ia consequence of the pressure of the money market, reduced his terms of tuition. This will provo a great accommodation to tho public, and will in crease the popularity of Dr. MYERS' establishment. Dr. MYERS has labored" faithfully to make his school acceptable to the community; he haft en? gaged competent instructors, and tho curriculum is thorough and complete. Tax BATTEAU RACE.-The owners of batteaus who intend entering them for the race are retened to an advertisement of a meeting in another col? umn. A number of persons are interested ia this subject, and considerable sport is anticipated by the contestants'. A batteau race is something of ?, novelty, for, though the craft are common to these waters, ho attempt has been heretofore made io have a public trial of the speed of tho respective boats. The meeting to-night has been called to decide some points, and to afford all interested an opportunity of entering their names. INQUESTS.-Coronor W anna held an inquest yesterday tt No. 8 Clifford street, on the body of Cesar Collies (colored). Collins was employed on the Alabama, and while working on that ves? sel on Friday last, accidentally fell into the hold and received injurie.-, that resulted iu his death. The jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death bv accident. We learn that an inquest was also held tm the body of t> colored woman living back of the Race Course. The verdict was, that she came to her death from exposure and the want of the neces? sary medical attendance. BURGLARS FOILED.-The New York Untes of the 17th says : The office of RICHARD P. BUCK ? Co., No. 29 South-street, was entered on Saturday night by burglars, who moved the burglar-proof sato into the middle office, where they worked on it till S o'clock P. M. ou Sunday when they were fright? ened by the entrance of Mr. PAUUN, who had an office in the upper part of the building. The burglars succeeded in removing only one ol the plates of the safe, which was made by MAR? VIN A Co., and failed to get m.ofti which was in? side. They went off in a hurry, leaving their tools behind them. THE GEORGI A LOTTERY.-Broad street has always been the financial centre of Charleston, where the moneyed men most did congregate. Though somewhat, shorn of tte past glories, it still [.re? serves this reputation, and is yet known as the re? sort of the bankers and brokers. Recently quite an addition has been mace to this locality, and the lower story of the Elmore Iusurance is now occu? pied by the GeorgT State Lottery. It was per? haps a wise choice of a location, as it was but natural that men who were desirous of obtaining money should apply to those parties that offered tte greatest inducements. The Georgia Lottery is managed on fair and equitable terms, aud the parties investing run but little risk, as the chances are nearly all in then favor. THE NEW YORK AND BREMEN STEAMSHIP LINE. By reference to our advertising columns it will be seen that Messrs. J. A. ENSLOW & Co., No. m East Bav, have bren appointed agents or thia lino, and are prepared to sell tickets from this city to Germany, also through tickets to London, Paris, Calais and other points. This line consists of the first-class steamet s Bailie, AOanliu, Western Me? tropolis, and Northern TAjht. These vessels leave Pier No. I? on North River oven- second Saturday from Saurday the 28th. The Baltic, Captain ti. W. ROOERS, leaves on tins dato for Southampton, Havre and Brcmeu. Au agency in this cit) will be a great accommod?t iou to travellers, and Musars. ENSLOW A CO. are prepared to sell tickets to ?ny of the point? mentioned in their advertisement. -o MB. JOE.." MITCHEL, tho distinguished Irienman, we learn, at the earnest solicitation of his friends, jg about to resume tbe publication o? his paper in New York whether or not under ita old title, "The Citizen," we do aol know. Mr. Mncusxis, an able journalist, one of the most vigorous writers ever connected with the press of the country. His knowl? edge js very compiehensive and his experience va ried and valuable, however dearly bought. Mr. MITCHEL has many friends and admirers all over the United States, who will be pleased once more to have SB opportunitv of testifying their regard for bim ?nd his services and sufferings. In this city, within sight of Sumter, where Captain MITCHEL bravely fought and met a gallant death, we know there are many who take a deep interest in all that concerns Mr. M.'e fortunes. LiTESAit*.-Baltimore, saya the Round Table, is] to give us, from the 1st of October, Southern Society, a weekly journal of literature, society sud art. The flold for a journal of tins character in the South is a large ona, and ona which we should be glad to see creditably occupied. Tho promises made by the projectors of the new enterprise are ample. Messrs. WM. GILMORE Santa and JOHN MITCHELL are to bo among the editorial writers; among the definitely announced contributors aro JOHN EST*N QOOKE, PAUL IT. HATNE JOHN R. THOMPSON, aud, of ladies, the author* of ''Emily Chester," aud of "Somebody's Darling (VT Miss EMILY V. MASON, Mr*. FANNY DOWNLWL together with some whose names are less known to us; while contributions are "expected" from, among others, Miss AUGUSTA J. EVANS, ALBERT TAYLOB BLEDSOK, LL. D., Mrs. MARGARET J. PBESTON, HENBY TIMROD, Hon. A. J. REQUIER, MIS. ANNA COBA RITCHIE, GEOBQEFBEOEBIOK HOLMES, LL. D., HENRY II. FLASH, Mrs. GtoRQE H. OALVERT, SID? NEY LANOB, J. WOOD DAVIDSON and JAUEO BAU BON HOPE. -o-r Row BOAT RACE.-A spirited contest took place on Saturday afternoon between several well known row boats of this city. The boats started from CHISOLM'S Mill and rowed to a poiut in front of the Battery, making a distance of nearly a half mile. The following boats were entered: Rosa, by Mr. RAVENEL. La Belle, by Mr. BEVAN. Flirt, by Mr. CHEVKS. Wharf Hoot, by Mr. JEBVBY. Lulu, by Mr. LEWIS. Coaimodoro INOBAHAM and tho Rev. W. B. YATES wore requested to act as umpires, and Captain F. N. BONNEAU aa starting judge. The race was woll contested, and attracted a largo crowd to the Bat? ten-. The bathing houte being stormed by the fair sex, yielded gallantly, and was quickly garri? soned. The Rosa and fa Bede were evidently the masters of the situation, and for some time pulled side by side, but the Rosa, emboldened by her former successes, pushed forward and was de? clared the victor. After the race the boats passed ia review before the fair spectators on the Battery, ?.nd received the commendation, "well done." -o THE SAVANNAH AND CHABLESTON BAILBOAD.-By reference to an advertisement in another column.| it will bs seen that the work of reconstruction on this road is proceeding rapidly. Only a day or two since we announced the completion of the road to the Yeinasee Station, and we are now called upon to chronicle still further progre.'B. Pocotaligo, ono of the most important points on the Une, has been reached, trat the work still goos bravely on, the Company have taken "Excelsior" as ?heir motto, and have deter? mined to speedily restore the land commu? nication between the two cities. By tapping Pocotaligo the road is now accessible from Beaufort, Hilton Head and Port Royal Ferry, be? sides the villages of McPbersonville and Graham? ville. This section of the country is extremely rich, and the planters will be enabled to visit their places and return to tho city with ease. The fare to Pocotaligo is $5, but the advantages that will accrue to the patrons of the road will make this sum a mere bagatelle. The directors and tho dif? ferent officer?) of the road deserve great credit for tho diligent manner in which they have labored to rebuild thia Une, and we are assured that their en? deavors to assist the public will meet with the. suc? cess they 80 richly merit. -o-. * CAUSE AND E I-EOT_Somo weeks since, a num? ber of workmi a, with carts and shovels, went to work in Wer.tworth and Gadsden street?, and finally built a sidewalk for some distance on both these stree.e, at an elevation of fifteen inchon, not only abovo tho street, but abovo the general level of half the lots in that square. The result might have been foretold, but, it would seem, was nut foreseen. The stagnant water ot these half dozen lots finally became so putrid that tho entire neighborhood became alarmed, and the Board of Health very properly ordered a ditch cut aud tko water drawn ort'to tho river. Thin was very prop? erly dono between sunsot of Friday and niuo o'clock the next morning, but we ventare tho as? sertion that no more offensive matter could have boen disturbed than this horrid slimy fluid. Another sidewalk, strange to say, Las just Laen put down, on the opposite side of tl e same street, at the northwest corner of Lynch. . Here there is about un acre of low ground, Whit h drains natu? rally just at the corner of Wentwcrth and Lynch, having made a channel tu tho Vent, worth stfeet main drain, just under the old w j^den shed on thu corner. But very recently * force of workmen havo built np a heavy s" dewalk all along both streets, and the water mu< c accumulate and' stag? nate. Now, in the name of common sense, who is responsible for this sor, of business? It is high time that our city fatr drs put these improvements under some system which will lint permit such doings, which, we am sorry to learn, are not un? common in any par of the city. -o - MES?Bfl. EDITOBS :--I have noticed in your paper several allusions to tho low lots in tho Uppor Wards, and hope that the municipal authorities will take some action that will tend to abate the nuisance and ronder the unhealthy sections again habitable. The eastern portion of Ctlhoun strcot is composed principally of mudo land. Bat, with few exceptions, the lots are high and the drainage good. Among the exceptions, however, is one that demands some notice. It ie a large vacant lot on the north side of Calhoun Htreet, immediate? ly opposite East Bay. This lot extends from Cal? houn to Chapel street, but that portion fronting on Calhoun is not only lower than the adjoining lots, but considerably below tho level of the pave? ment. As a natural consequence, it receives the drainage of the neighborhood, and the result is a quagmire that is a slur upon thu city, and which is a fruitful source of fe vor. Occasionally this bay is stirred np by the cattle that stray into the en? closure, and the stench then becomes unendurable. An effort was made some time since to fill up tho lot with chaff, but the labor was wasted, as the mire soon absorbed the chaff and the only result was a small crop of volunteer rios. At present this lot is the abode of sand birds, and is occasion? ally visited by a few curlews, but is utterly useless for building purposes, and is a nuisance that is complained of by the entire neighborhood. If the Board of Health, whose duty it ?B to examine into the sanitary condition of the city, should make a report on this lot, wo trust they will ordor it to be thoroughly drained and filled up with good material, and they will secure the thanks of the citizens of tho EAST END. n. For Conyen lenee, Economy and Cheapness, the greatest Labor Saving Machine that can be put on a Plantation. OPINIONS OF THE PEOPLE t ALLXNDALF, BAKNWELL DlSTIUCT, S. C., I March 1, 1867. \ Mtvtri.little d- Marshall: OENTLEMKN : I used, din ing the past Beaton, one of "Ingersoll's Portable Cotton Presses," purehaaed of you last September. I have always been prcjudlrrd in favor of the "Screw Press," and nothing but dire necessity in/| doced me to try any other. I tale pleasure, however, lu adding my lest inn .uv lu favor of its cutir? adaptation to the wauls ot a cotton plantation. It bas surpassed my most .sanguine expectation1). I have packed with but two hands, yet I preter four-two at each lever. My bales all weighed over 500 lbs. The first lot I sent to market averaged SB2 1 os. My lt upi c.T ?mi la that 600 lbs. ls about the capacity of the Press, and a greater number of pounds si lbj ct 'the fullow-bloek to too much risk, un? less the sidos ol' the cotton box was increased. It would add greatly to the value of tho Press if the cotton box was ten Inches longer. lu haste, I am, ven* respectfully, Your obedient servant, Ac. B. W. LAWTON. V. S. B. W. L. OFFICE OF KTKO'S MOITNTAIN RAILROAD COMPANY, I I'oHEVlt.LE. H. C., April Di, 1807. I GENTLEMEN : I have just received your letter ol Feb? ruary Uth-upon my return to this place, alter an ab? sence of two months-and this reply may be too late for your "Descriptive Circular of Ingersoll's Cotton Press." The Presa I used iti p.wking my cottou last year worked admirably, parking, with ?ase from COO to 625 lbs. With good active hands to work it, I am satisfied that from eighteen to twenty bules uiiKht readily be packed in a day. This Pres?? combinen the advantages of lightncs?, and consequent portability and t-liuplielty il? lng easily man? aged bj any one of ordinary intelligence). Great com? pressing force, with little motive, power, and "last, but not least," it is worked entirely by hand, thus saving for the farm horses the hard labor, imposed upon thsm by the use of the ordinary "Screw."
