ITEMS-EDITORIAL AND OTHERWISE. _T/he only, daughter of Stonewall Jackson is at school in-Charlotte. ?~-?Rer. B. .F. D, Perry, of the Episcopal Church at Camden, died on the 14th instant. ? The Democratic State Committee of Con? necticut has i/aued a call for a State Conven tionvto'vniee| at ^New Haven on Tuesday, Feb? ruary 3, td&om&iate a State ticket. ? It is stated that Gen. B. F. Butler wrote the speech delivered by the colored member of the House of Representatives, Elliott, of South Carolina, in/reply to Alexauder H. Stephens, of I Georgia, on the civil rights bill. ? Jefferson Davis was called upon at Vicks burg/a-few days ago, for a speech; but declined to make one, assigning as a reason that owing to his pecliar position, he ought to be silent ; and besides, in speeches heretofore made, his remarks had been misconstrued to the injury of | the Southern peqpie. 5^ -Ai convention of the officers and soldiers of the late Confederate prmy is to be held in Nashville on the 22d of February, for the pur? pose of taking step" to secure a truthful his? tory of the late war, by the selection of an his? torian who will bring to the work the necccssa ry talents and acquirements. ? Anjpng the antiquities disposed of at a sale last^^eJDai Gord?nsville, Va., were a bedstead that had belonged to Marie Antoine? tte,^ chair once owned, by General Wash? ington;? piano once the property of John C. Calhoun, and many articles which formerly be? longed to President Madison. , ? Edgar A. Poe published a capital sketch, entitled";'How to Write a Blackwood Article." Gov, Moses, of South Carolina, has. a patent way of composing messages, if it be true that he recently stole two-thirds of the message of I the Governor, of New Hampshire. The Detroit Free Press wonders he did not steal the whole of it, while, the Louisville Courier-Journal ex? plains that the other third was valueless, for it has been several years since a South Carolina official neglected to steal anything that was worth stealing. ? The-'Hte Gov. Orr, in one of the few dis? patches \vhich he wrote during the short pe? riod which intervened between his arrival at St. Petersburg and his death, spoke thus of .his reception by Prince Gortschakoff: "I had a short but agreeable interview with the Prince. He referred to the Cata cazy affair, and expressed regret at its occurrence. He said that Catacazy was a fine"writer, who had been with him four or five years in the foreign office, who, he thought, would be of great service in America, but that he turned out a meddlesome fellow, greatly lacking in judgment. He was, there? fore, no longer in the service of the govern? ment." Iron in the Blood MAKES THE WEAK STRONG, i * f! The Peruvian Syrup, a Protect * - ed Solution of the Protoxide of ^Iron, is so combined as to have ' the character of an aliment, as ?? easily digested and assimilated t?ith the blood as the simplest food.
