LOCAL NEWS IN BRIEF Free Entertainment.?The advertisement of Prof. Cushman, in another column, informs the public that he will give a free exhibition of train? ed nnimals at this place on Monday next. His performances are said to be very remarkable, and we learn from a reliable source that there is no -humbug in this system of controlling refractory animals. The details arc fully set forth in tho advertisement. As there is no admission fee charged, the .pavilion will doubtless be crowded with spectators. Prof. Cushman will give an ex? hibition at Belton on Saturday, the 13th, and at Pendtcton on Tuesday following, March 16th. The Contested Election.?As stated last week, testimony on the part of Hon. J. P. Reed, the respondent, was taken before W. W. Humphreys, Esq., Judge of Probate, on Thursday and Friday last. The evidence was conclusive and overwhel? ming in sustaining the answer of Mr. Reed, so far as Anderson county is concerned, and giving a positive and unequivocal denial to the numerous false allegations made Oy the contestant. No ono appeared in behalf of H?ge, who is certainly ?eschewed by the leading colored men in this coun? ty, and we are inclined to think that the white Radicals are ashamed of his unscrupulous charges -against our people. Banking Facilities.?We learn from a trust? worthy source that an opportunity is now offered to our merchants and business men to secure bank? ing facilities in this town by the establishment of a branch of the South Carolina Loan and Trust Company, recently organized in Charleston. It is -only necessary that a comparatively small sum should be subscribed to the capital stock of said Company to obtain an Agency at this place. We will publish the Act of Incorporation, which au? thorizes this Company to establish Agencies, in our next issue, and have been promised fuller infor? mation TCgaTding the steps necessary to be taken in order to establish the proposed Agency. We think it will meet the hearty concurrence of every business man. Death of Well Known Citizens.?It a sin? gular coincidence that we have lo announce this morning the death of three old citizens of this ?ounty, all of whom died after brief illness. On Thursday morning last, in this village, one of the oldest inhabitants of our town passed away. Mr. Ezekiel George, aged 55 years, departed this life, having been sick only a weok. He had been living in Anderson for more than thirty-five years, and was perhaps known to every resident during that time. His generous nature aud accommo? dating spirit won many friends, who will regret his demise. Maj. James Gilmer died suddenly at his resi? dence near Roberts' Church, on Thursday night last, lie was complaining for scarcely half an bour before his death. Maj. Gilmer was one of our most highly respected citizens, and at one time represented this District in the Legislature. He was 76 years of age. Mr. Rodeet Smitu, another estimable citizen, died yesterday morning, at his residence four miles cast of this place, in the 74th year of his age. .He was taken sick at 3 o'clock on Tuesday, and ^ived only about twelve hours. Mr. Smith had never occupied any public statiou, but was always regarded with the highest esteem by his fellow citizens. Special |Ioticcs, HERMON LODGE, No. 116, A. F. M. May 13, 1868 47 5nT IMPROVED COTTON PLANTER. THE undersigned offers to the planters of this and adjoining counties an IMPRO VEI) COTTON PLANTER, of his own invention, which has been used by him for the past two years with complete success. There are two kinds of this Planter ; one for planting the seed alone, by which a single hand can open the furrows, drop the seed, and cover at the same time, at the rale of five acres per day. The same amount of work can be ac? complished with the other, and in nddition t? open? ing the furrows, dropping the seed and covering, a separate partition enables you to put in fertili? zers in any desired quantity to the acre. It will plant either cotton, corn or peas, and give any distance that may be desirable, which is a great advantage over all other inventions of this kind. It is simple in its construction, and can be mana? ged as easy as a plow. Persons wishing to examine this Planter will find one of each kind on exhibition at the store of Kkt.sk & McCclly, No. 10 Granite Row, Ander? son C. II. Any information respecting this Plan? ter will be furnished on application to the above named firm. JAS. C. KEYS. March 4, 1869 SC 4 NOTICE. Deputy Collector's Office, ) Anderson, J/arch 2, 1869.
