bis own brother had taken his own life. The aftair created a great sensation and soon a large crowd was gathered. The shooting took place at the Reid House. Mrs. Reid said the gentleman came in and said that he wanted a room until to-morrow. He was shown up stairs and given a room. He asked that some water be sent up. A girl immediately carried up the water, and to his inquiry told hira that dinner was then ready. He told her to hurry out, as he wanted to take a bath. He closed the door suddenly, locked it, and when the girl reached the foot of the steps she heard the report of a Eistol. Several persons rushed up stairs, and reakingopen the door found Mr. Gaston lying in a pool or blood with a pistol in his hand." He was still breathing, but never spoke. The flow of b iOod was enormous. The shooting was done with a 38-calibre seven-shooter, which the unfortunate man had placed in his mouth and tired. The ball passed upward into the head and caused almost instantaneous death. In his pocket was found this note addressed to his brother, Dr. J. McF. Gaston : "Pulse 120 ; fever high. Mr. Gaston was about 39 years of age. He was a graduate of the South Carolina University and a prominent lawyer of Chester. He was for eight years Solicitor of this Judicial Circuit, having been elected to the position in 1876. In * that memorable canvass he did much effective work for the success of the Reform ticket. On it he was the nominee for Solicitor, which position he afterwards held until the close of last year. He leaves a wife and two children. I grew worse and worse until it was almost impossible for me to lie down and sleep at night for 18 months, owing to the severity of thecough. Theonly way I could sleep was in a chair, my head resting on a pillow on a table. Was treated by two physicians, and tried a number of patent medicines, all of which did no good. After having despaired of ever getting well, my wife consulted you by letter. You sent two bottles of your Dyspeptic Elixir ; in less time than three days I coula lie down and sleep as well as lever could in my life; a few bottles cured me perfectly. Yours truly, JOHN F.
