bis own brother had taken his own life. The
aftair created a great sensation and soon a large
crowd was gathered. The shooting took place
at the Reid House. Mrs. Reid said the gentleman
came in and said that he wanted a room
until to-morrow. He was shown up stairs and
given a room. He asked that some water be
sent up. A girl immediately carried up the
water, and to his inquiry told hira that dinner
was then ready. He told her to hurry out, as he
wanted to take a bath. He closed the door
suddenly, locked it, and when the girl reached
the foot of the steps she heard the report of a
Eistol. Several persons rushed up stairs, and
reakingopen the door found Mr. Gaston lying
in a pool or blood with a pistol in his hand." He
was still breathing, but never spoke. The flow
of b iOod was enormous. The shooting was done
with a 38-calibre seven-shooter, which the unfortunate
man had placed in his mouth and
tired. The ball passed upward into the head and
caused almost instantaneous death. In his pocket
was found this note addressed to his brother,
Dr. J. McF. Gaston :
"Pulse 120 ; fever high. If I live it will be as
a lunatic or imbecile. Money and watch in va1

"T. C. Gaston."
The jury of inquest found that he eame to
his death bv his own band.
Mr. Gaston was about 39 years of age. He was
a graduate of the South Carolina University and
a prominent lawyer of Chester. He was for
eight years Solicitor of this Judicial Circuit,
having been elected to the position in 1876. In
* that memorable canvass he did much effective
work for the success of the Reform ticket. On
it he was the nominee for Solicitor, which position
he afterwards held until the close of last
year. He leaves a wife and two children. His
remains passed this place last Monday for interment
in Chester.

You have a grease or soiled spot on your clothing,

THE music from the mortar this week will be

glad news we have again in stock the celebrated
"Old Piedmont Beauty"
Chewing Tobacco. We challenge the world to
produce a better chew for 50 cents a pound or
10 cents a plug. This brand is manufactured of
a very high grade of leaf; wrapper and filler
alike; inside as good as Die outside ; every plug
in the box twins and o6nnot be distinguished
one from the other in appearance, quality or
weight. Come from the east, west, north'and
south; come singly, come in twos, fours and
squads. Listen not to the
SILVER TONGIJED SALESMEN
That obstruct your way. They are all honorable
men and do the best they can in Tobacco, but
they haven't got "Piedmont Beauty" and can't
get it. If any man alleges that he has as good
Tobacco as the Beauty at the same price, deny
the allegation, and defy the allegator and come
along to the YORK DRUG STORE and don't
forget the name, "Piedmont Beauty" and the
Srice, 50 cents a pound. In the week ending
uturday, August Hth, we retailed 40 pounds or
33 plugs* daily. 9 boxes now in store, and 65
more at the factory for us that we expect to see

DYSPEPSIA CAN BE CURED.
Kufaula, Ala., May 1st, 1883.
Un Hni.t. T)kar Sir About live years ago I
whs taken with a violent cough with enlarged
liver and constipation. I grew worse and worse
until it was almost impossible for me to lie down
and sleep at night for 18 months, owing to the
severity of thecough. Theonly way I could sleep
was in a chair, my head resting on a pillow on a
table. Was treated by two physicians, and
tried a number of patent medicines, all of which
did no good. After having despaired of ever
getting well, my wife consulted you by letter.
You sent two bottles of your Dyspeptic Elixir ;
in less time than three days I coula lie down and
sleep as well as lever could in my life; a few
bottles cured me perfectly. Yours truly,
JOHN F. KEHOE.
