To the Editor of The Dispatch. It was my privilege to attend the last meeting of this body held in Lexington Conrt honse the first Monday in October. Not a very large number were present, but those present showed HATjnt-inn tn f.hp pansp of fhft common I schools written large upon them. A band of men so impressed with the importance of the work they have been appointed to superintend, so impressed with their duty to the coming citizenship of our county, that they left their homes and their farms at the very busiest season of the year and drove, many of them, over almost impassable roads, that they might meet together and talk common plans for the betterment of onr common schools?the real trainers oi the citizenship of our land. I know of no movement of recent years that is bigger with opportunity than the organization of the school trustees of our country for the betterment of the common schools. I long to see the day when every school trustee will be a member of such organizations. We people who live in the rurai districts can see plainly that our educational system is getting topheavy. Our higher institutions are being pushed forward out of all proportion to our common schools. Every i year the representatives of our higher institutions are before our legislature with the needs of their institutions. They are kept so persistently before j our lawmakers that nothing of their needs esca, a the public notice. It has not been so with our common schools. Those in charge of their interests have been backward in letting their needs be Known. JLet tne trustees of each county of the State organize and, like the "managers of our higher institutions, carry the imperative needs of our common schools before our law-makers that they may look at the whole matter together and give to our common schools the consideration which their interests and the common public weal demands. If it is a State's duty to educate her citizens, t .< n out of all question she should give her greatest consideration, her best energies, and her most bountiful and hearty support to the common schools, where she meets, if she meets at all, those who are to be her guiders and defenders in the years to come. ? Let the trustees of our common schools organize and memorialize the state of this, her greatest duty, in matters educational. School trustees, in the face of these things, let every man do his duty.
