The man behind the hoe is more important than the man behind the gun. | It is the farmer that keeps things ! stirred up that raises the biggest crops, j Very fine flower seeds can be easily ! and evenly sown by the use of a dredge box. It's a sign of a hard year for the family when the wife carries the stove and the^husband the pipe. Some men marry a girl because she i is a great talker. Better get a talking J machine; you can stop it when you get j tired. Don't leave an ax sticking where some one will fall on it, or stick scythes. hatchets or tools overhead to fall and hurt some one. Plant trees, plant flowers, plant roses, plant smiles good deeds every day, and above all plant the feet in the way of right doing. Farmers, do not be discouraged by failure, the sunshine is on our side. "We are promised a seed-time and harvest while the world remaineth. Keep the rounds of the ladder all good and stout. When you get to trimming fruit trees or hunting worms' nests you don't want to fall and break a leg. Things that snap under you often take the snap out of you. If you want to know just how good ! a farmer a man isf go way back on his place where few eyes ever rest and see how things are going on there. If everything is neat and shipshape there, you may depend upon it that the man is a good farmer. The best investment farmers can make is in giving children a good start in life. But that doesn't mean a big farm and a fine money-outfit alone. They will need some help, some courage, 9ome hopefulness, much truthfulness, clean hearts and pure minds considerably more than money. Here i9 the most approved method of treating seed potatoes to prevent a scabby crop: Soak the whole seed for two hours in a mixture of one-half pint of formalin (often called formaldehyde) and fifteen gallons of cold water; dry the seed, cut, and plant in ground that has not recently grown potatoes. Bad roads and scrubby stock go together. The farmers who set out to have better stock set out at the same time to have better roads, better crops, and more improvements and conveniences on the farm. And in a neighhood where there are good roads, improved stock and farms, we find a development of intellect and a fuller, better appreciation of life. It would be just as sensible for them to prescribe Quinins in its crude form as to prescribe Cod Liver Oil in its natural state. In Scott's Emulsion j the oil is emulsified and made easy to take?easy to digest and easy to be absorbed in to the body?and is the most natural and useful fatty food to feed and nourish the wasted body that is known in medicine today. Nothing can be found to take its place. If you are run-down you should take it. SCOTT & BOWNE, 409 Pearl St., New York Mrs. J. P. Farmer Sues "W- Hampton Sellers. The State, 20th. ? A cause in court without a parallel in the history of this county and with few if any like it iu the history of the courts of the State, will be heard at the ensuing term of court, Judge J. C. Klugh, presiding. Mrs. J. P. Farmer is euing the slayer of her husband for $25,000 damages. On the 22nd of February last year, Mrs. Farmer was made a widow by the bullet of VV. II. Sellers. Farmer was a dispensary constable searching the house in which Sellers was living. The constable was shot down as he | was breaking open the door of the nouse. ne naa exniotrea a searcn warrant through a window, but Sellers would not let him come in without condition. Mrs. Farmer is now bringing suit for $25,000. There is one similar case in the annals of the courts of this State. In January, 1S96, Jas. F. Williams of Georgia, was killed at Blacksburg, S. C., and subsequently M. R. Reese and D. F. Luckie were convicted of murder. They escaped from jail and, unless dead, arc even now fugitives from justice. Mrs. Williams brought suit against the estate of M. R. Reese, and the records of the supreme court do not show that the case ever came up to this court, hut a Columbia attorney stated yesterday that Mrs. Williams got some kind of a settlement from the estate of her husband's slayer. EVER HAVE IT? If Ton Have, the Statement of This Losington Citizen Will Interest You. Ever have a "low-down" pain in the back? In the "small," right over the hips? That's the home of backache. It's caused by sick kidneys. That's why Doan's Kidney Pills cure it. Lexington people endorse this. Read a case of it: C. A. Geiger, Depot St., Lexington, S. C., says: "For several months I suffered from dull pains across the small of my back and as they did not disappear, I came to the conclusion that my kidneys were disordered. At night after lying down my back pained me intensely and I also noticed an irreguiarity in the passages of the kidney secretions. I was feeling miserable when I procured Doan's Kidney Pills at the Kaufmann Drug Co. I used them as directed and they proved to be the remedy I needed. They have helped me so much already that I feel I will soon be entirely well and it gives me pleasure to recommend Doan's Kidnev Pills to other sufferers.'' For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents.
