Ansel Yia9 refused clemency to Morgan Thrailkill, the white man advanced in life, who killed Benny Burton at Monetta in April. 1908. Thrailkiil and his son, Clarence, were convicted. The latter has served out his time and was among those who appeared before Gov. Ansel in making a petition for the pardon of the elder Thrailkill. The petition was indeed a strong ore and was strongly presented. It is drawn up in elegant and appealing munnflr anrJ ic citrnoH manv r?f tho responsible people of Saluda, Edgefield and other counties. The plea is the advanced age of Thraiikili, his former alleged God-fearing and upright life, and his conduct as a prisoner. He is further said to be suffering from a disease of the kidneys which will shorten his life and make his services of little value to the State. Gov. Ansel indorses on the petition: ' After mature consideratian of the evidence in this case and the report of the judge and solicitor the petition for pardon is refused." Solicitor Timmerman writes that he did not try the case, but, after reading the testimony, "I must decline to recommend a pardon for petitioner. As I see it, the jury in this case could have done nothing less than convict the defendant. I have failed to discover the slightest necessity which the petitioner and his son, who was convicted along with him for man slaughter, brought about." Judge R. C. Watts, who presided at j the trial, writes Gov. Ansel: "Thede-! fendant wTas convicted before me at Saluda, S. C., of murder with arecommendation to mercy cf the court, and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the State penitentiary. The verdict of the jury in my opinion was proper and if any mistake was made in it, they were too merciful. . . . From what developed on the trial, I can not recommend a pardon."?The State, 8 th. Z?rs. Shuler Acquitted. In the court of general sessions at Orangeburg on Thursday the case of Mrs. Fannie C. Shuler, charged with the murder of her husband, Frank C. Shuler, near Elloree, about two months ago, was entered into. It was thought that this case would consume considerable time, but it ended rather abruptly. It developed from the testimony of the State's witness that Shuler had expressed the wish and the hope, that his wife would not be punished, as he did not believe she really intended to kill him. When this fact was fully established, the stated rested its case, and the defense asked for an acquittal, which was ordered by the court, they rendering the verdict of not guilty without leaving their seats. The result seems to be in harmony with public sentiment, and the verdict is generally approved. Karried. On April 5th. at the home of the officiating minister, the Rev. W. D. Quick, Mr. Solomon F. Polite and Pi President Greets Tillman. Washington, May 8.?President Taft tonight was entertained at a banquet tendered hi.ii by the citiz uis of Washington under the auspices of the board of trade and the chamber of commerce, More than 800 representative business men of the national capital were present and an array of prominent men in public life were present as guests. While the president was being introduced, Senator Tillman strode into the h?ll tnwnrrl thp nrflairipnt1, THp latter greeted him and grasped hand cordially, remarking: "Hello, senator, what are you trying to pass yourself off for tonight?" Tillman laughingly rejoined: "Oh, I just drifted in here to see how you would behave yourself among the common people." This merry interchange provoked much amusement among the guests. President Taft made a 30-minute speech, during which he declared that he wa3 strongly in favor of retaining the municipal i'orm of government for the District of Columbia, but that he had not reached any conclusion as to what he would recommend to congress about the real point of contenti.m, I whether there shall be a governor or three commissioners as at present. The president declared himself unalterably opposed to the plan for suffrage in the district.
