There ere women who are witty, There are women who are pretty; There are women who will always have their way, There are women who are sainted. There are women who are painted. ' Bat of all the latter, be careful what yon say. There are women who are healthy. There are women who are wealthy, There are women who are worth their weight in gold,. There are women who are trnthful, There are women who are >outhful, Did you ever see a woman who was old? There are women who are slender. There are women who are tender. There are women who are large and fat and red; There are women who have married, There are women who have tarried, There are women who are silent? they are dead. Sow's This. Des Moinep, Iowa, April 2.?Considerable political significance is believed to attach to the Thomas Jefferson Day banquet to be given In this city tonight. The announcement that William B. Hearst is to have a place of honor at the festival board is taken as an indication that the Hearst presidential boom, which has been steadily nursed for some time through the medium of a cental liforftrv hnrpan at. WuRhinofcnn. is about to be publicly launched. William J. Bryan is also to be present and is expected to further explain hie plans to hold the silver forces together. So far as state politics is concerned the banquet is intended to counteract the influence of the Jack son day banquet at Waterloo last January, in which former Governor % Boies was the central figure and in ? which Mr. Bryan and his platform were ignored by all the speakers. From the following it will be seen that the Columbia Afternoon Record is using its capital, time and energy in building another electric railway. Rut unfortunately as regards praclical results, this new scheme, like all its predecessors, is j being built on paper and inflated with a considerable amount of gas. Howe?er, here is what cur sanguine 4 and enthusiastic afteraoon neighbor across the Congaree has to say: The putting on of the "Washington A Clark" to carry cotton good from Columbia to Charleston is bu the first step in a plan about to be put through which will make Columbia the receiver of all cotton goods shipped North via Charleston, and also establish connection by electric roads with all the principal mill towns in the upper part of the State. It was learned Wednesday from a leading financier of this city that the move originated with Charleston b inkers, who .desire to restore Charleston's prestige as a port, and who saw in the river navigation between Columbia and Georgetown th^ chance to do this by an expenditure of thousands of dollars. As soon as the plans are pefected an electric road will be built between Columbia and Winnsboro. From there the road will be extended to Union and from Union on up into ? i 1 _.e iu. :n OparianDarg, tae neari, 01 iuu uim section of this State. The road will be coder the control of the same capitalists who are back of the plan to secure all freight shipments North by way of Charleston, and who are interested in navigation between Columbia and Georgetown. From Columbia to Winnsboro a straight line can easily be built, as there are no rivers to cross and the distance is only about thirty-five miles. A straight line between Winns boro and Union would be about 30 miles, and between Uoion and Spartanburg only about 27 miles. The plan calls for a large sum of money, but the men back of it believe that it, will pay and they have accordingly i made preparations for carrying it out. i J I iL. A A ?L8iue iruca tut? irtJUjeuuuuB ouyauo ? age this would give Charleston over other points that now receive these shipments, Columbia would gain considerably as a result of the drop in the freight rates the railroads would have to make to meet this, and be cause of the fact that all freight would have to be unloaded here for shipment by water. It can be stated that this is not merely speculation on the part of the financiers, but an actual plan that will be carried through, and was learned from the best authority. - Caution! This is not a gentle word?but when you think how liable you are not to purchase the only remedy universally known and a remedy that ? I, w has had the largest sale of any medicine in the world since 1868 for cure and treatment of Consumption and Throat and Lung troubles without losing its great popularity all these years, you will be thankful we called your attention to Boschee's fGerman Syrup. There are so many ordinary cough remedies made by druggists and others that are cheap and good for light colds perhaps, but for severe Coughs, Bronchitis, Croup?and especially forConsumption, where there is difficult expectoration and coughing the nights and mornings, there is nothing like German Syrup. The 25 cents size has just been introduced this year. Regular size 75 cents. At all druggists. Two New Counterfeits. Washington, April 1 ?The secret service has announced the discovery of two counterfeit notes. One is a $5 silver certificate of thef series of 1899 and is a poorly executed etched production on thin, soft paper, no attempt having been made to imitate the silk fiber of the genuine. Tho fttKcr to a nofinnol Ko?l? note, reading "United States, the Citizens' International Bank, New York, pay to the bearer on demand $5." It bears a portrait of Garfield. The seal appears to be that of ^me secret order. The note bears no signature, either of the United States j or of the bank officers. ? Makss A Cleaa Sweop. Rohhed The Grave. A startling incident is narrated by John Oliver of Philadelphia, as follows: "I was in an awful condition. Then c?j o~ ? ?r I was advised to use Electrio Bitter6; to my great joy, the first bottle made a decided improvement. I continued their ubc for thres weeks, and am now a well man. The custom of giving engagement rings ranks back to long before the Christian era. With the ancient Egyptians engagement rings were j always of iron, to indicate the mQtual sacrifice of liberty of the contracting parties. I | One of the very earliest adorn- j ! ment8 of betrothal rings was a load- j etone, which symbolized the attrac- i tive force which drew a maiden from j her own family circle into that of her husband.
