We are indebted tc Treasurer Cauthen for the follow ing figures, showing the various taxes to be collected, the assessed valuation of property, etc : The amount called for is $59,228 03 ?divided as follows: State tax, $13,409 12; county t ix for ordinary county purposes, $12,122 21 ; special county tax, (L <fc C R R bond.-.), $7,244 57 ; constitutional 3 mill tax, $8,081 48; special 6chool tax, $0,920 18; polls, $3,309. Increase of about $8,000.00 over last year though the levy is ^ mill less, caused mostly by the increased value of the Lancaster cotton mill?the mill alone paying this year $11,438.70. I ti 11 Neal, .* highly respected citizen of the uoper section of this county, was in town Monday, John Gill, a negro tenant on his place, knowing of his absence from home, went on the promises and after maxing t?n improper remark to Mrs. Neal intimated his fiendish purpose. Mrs. Neal rau into an adjoining room seized a shot gun and ruet the negro as he was advancing iuto the house. On seeing the gun in her bauds the negro turned and fled. Mrs. Neal reported the afTair at once and soon the men of the neighborhood , highly incensed, were scouring the woods for the brute . The Sheriff was promptly phoned for but being at Kershaw investigating the lynching o' Morrison, bis deputy, chief of Police I T. Hunter, went in haste to the scene of trouble to secure the uegro in case he was captured and prevont a lynching, which seemed highly probable from the state of mind of the people at that time. The negro could aot be found and Deputy Sheriff Hunter returned home that night. Search is still being made for the negro.
