T"=LEDGEB. THORLOW S. CARTER, K L> I TO K AM) M A N A (; K K. I8RUED WEDNESDAY AND SATI'KDA Y WEDSMDAT, OCTOBER i>, 1904. SITBSORIITION *. ->,? 1'K.I' YK NATIONAL TICKKT For President, AT.TON H I'AHk'P.H of Now York. For Yico -President, HENRY G. DAVIS, of West Virginia. White Man Lynched in Lan= caster County. (CONCLUDED FROM 1st l'AUK ) M. Caskey summoned a jury Ibis morning at 9 o'clock and took evidence in the Floyd case. The verdict was that Will Floyd came to his death from gunehoi wounds in tho hands of John T. Mornton from malicious forethought, according to tho testimony. Sheriff Hunter summoned a jnry for the coronor to hold an inquest over the dead body of morrison. The only two witnesses were Chief of Police Ernest Bntetnan and Dr. L. T. Gregory. Mr Bateman said that he wan standing at the front door of tho guard homo guarding hi* prisoner* while Dr. Gregory waa in conver atiou with prisoner, when and dewly the electric lights wout out aud the darkness was intense; one man rushed up And grabbed him then two more grabbed him inime diately and rushed him a short distance when others grubbed him and held bim securely in the dark alloy, and demanded the keys hut he refused to surrender them. Some one took them by force fron. his pocket and in a very short while the guard house was unlocked and tho crowd hurriedly left with tho prisoner. Dr. Gregory's evidence corr )borated that of Mr. Bateman. He aaid that the light went out so suddenly and unexpectedly and that the crowd shifted about so noiselessly that he and the police man were taken utterly by surprise ; they were not expecting a thing of that kind to occur as it did and had decided tha* no lynching would be attempted. The freight train wits runuiug into town ou one side with the heriO while the prisoner was being carried oul at the other? I The jury decided to hold the case , open subject to the coroner's call in case they could secure any undeveloped evidence. There is not a man in live miles of the place that will allow the body to be buried on his land and the coroner had trouble to find a place for the body, so J finally had to send it to thr> coun- j ly poornouse grouuda for interment, as Morrison's wife refused to take it. Bat she sent up for the money he had in his pocket when found hung. Eye witnesses said that Morri son cursed Floyd bitterly and shot him, Floyd threw up his hands and while begging him not to shoot turned te get away svhco the second shot, that strnck Floyd in the hack and caused death immediately was fired; that Morrison stepped up nearer and cursed hiiu again and would have shot him in the head had not several men yelled at him not to shoot any more A? bas been said before, all thel officers from the governor down did all in human power to mmvo the wretched murderer's life. Had Gov. Hoy ward himself been on the scene tho probability is that it would have boon impossible for him to stay the hands of the citizens who were wholly indignant and thought it time to take co t loo>r chances villi a jury ii 1 court. i Morrison recently boasted on 1 the streets of Kershaw that ho n ; could commit any crime ho chose ( ! in South Carolina and got out of it tl at a trial. s .lust hcfote ho was hung he 1 | curbed bitterly one of tho party p and told him, 'O ?n you, 1 hope A to meet you in h ?. Morrison hud a t iroatoned several others lives, t | especially those of southern rail- c i way moil who had anything to do o with having him reported, which e j emitted him to lose his job. Theco f< is no doutu in the minds ot many t< that he would have killed two t< more men, when they arrested v him, as ho covet ed them with bis ; pistol which would not work, as o it hung in some way and would J ti not revolve. |a Will Floyd's body was taken t< charge of by tho woodmen of the r world camp at this place an 1 a was today buried at Pleasant o 11 ill cemetery . I The down train today was crowd e ed when it reached hore with t< passengers to view tho body of Morrison. t< Sheriff Hunter did bis best to 1 \\ find out tho parties who did the g lynching. \N MORRISON'S BLOODY KK- c, CORD. r( t( He Had Killed a Negro and Two | White Men ? Refused to Give 0 Up his Railroad Job. A ? si Vn effort was made yesterday C to find out something about At ?r- it rison's record but little could be tl learned beyond that he was ac tl (putted of murder at the spring h term of Kershaw court and that it was said that be had killed two white men in North Carolina be- .' fore he came to Kershaw. Morrison had for several years been in charge of the Southern * railway's pumping station about | two miles below the town of Km- ^ shaw in Kershaw county. It whs * ihere, where he lived, that h? >' killed the negro. After his ac c (i 11 it t il it is said that a froighi a * tram which slopped at the tank $ wax out of omuI and ihe cow pro- c ceede.l to take on some of the coal ? which was thoro for tbc use of [' Morrison. no told tliem to let 1( the coal along and when they paid no attention to him Morrison came out with a Winchester rifle and S a ordered thorn away. They report- r< ed the incident and Morrison was ? discharged at once but ho refused ? to give up the place and no one, b k:.owing his desperate character, ? bad the hardihoo I to enforce the * ardors of the company. Morrison ^ was still hoi ling the job wbon he was killed 01 When ho killo 1 the negro la?t 01 year it was 10 days afterwards p that lie was arrested. u So fur an could I e learned, there 11 was little or no roaeon f??r Morri- ^ son's grudge iiji'iat y?nng Floyd who is highly sp' ken of. It is ^ said that Floyd had never taken u 01 r j drink or used an oath, and hn w?? ' tl an unusually tine young man in ai j * fl every respect. It is pathetic that pi he should die such a merciless ti death at the hands of a veritable \v desperado. '' tl SHERIFF HUNTER HAS RE |j l'ORTED. tr 0' ai \v SOLICITOR IIK.NKY WAS INSTRUCTED .
