Georges, July 12.-j?The senatorial and congressional candidates' meeting was held here in the court house todav in the pre.-s ence of a??out 300 |>eo| le. A number of ladies occupied seats in the "jury box" and were in terested spectators to all that transpired. The meeting was divided into two sessions one in the forenoon. the other in the afternoon. The morning session was not without incident. Messrs. Evans and Latimer were at it again and at one time it looked like it would be a fight within the bar of the court room, but the sheriff of Colleton (an adjoining county) put a stop to the matter. HOW IT HAPPENED. It came about in this vay: Mr. Evans was the first speaker and in his speech prodded Mr. Latimer in the same way and on the same matters which bad been brought out at previous meetings. Mr. Latimer made about the same refutations and said that they (meaning the Reformers) had carried Mr. Evans as long as they could and had dropped Evans, and he also made some allusion to Evans being his "friend" to to which Evans replied. "You never were my friend, you betray td inelikea dog." Then Latimer brought up the $15,000 bond deal and said Ev ane> had been charged with it in the last campaign and, Evans corrected him by saying that it bad only been rumored and some reference was made to an anonymous circular in connection with Mr. Duncan's name but their meaning was not cleared. THE MAN WHO REPEATS IT II A LIAR. Mr. Evans added that he bad denied the accusation at the time; denounced it as a lie; he now det nouuees it as such and the man who repeats it is a liar. At this point Mr. Latimer appeared as if he bad reached the point where endurance ceased to be a virtue, hence the enactment of the little tragedy. Mr. Latimer walked into the bote^and proceeded to Mr. Evans' room and said 4'Mr. Evans, I wish to have a word with you," to which Mr. Evans replied, ''No sir, you cannot talk to me," and walked down stairs and went out and dined with a friend. There was excitement, but those who know both of the men think that matters will soon reach a crisis. Julv 11 _Th? ing today had somewhat more life and /cat than has been the case for some days. An Edgefield zephyr enlivened the dull routino considerably. Col. Tillman was assailing Col. Talbert's white tax scheme vigorously, the latter interrupting a point madeby saying he <4di?l not know the remedy and .wanted to know." "You should inform youiself then," said Tillman, sarcastically. "I want you to understand, sir," said Talbert, rising and vehemontly gesticulating as he advanced towarcUTillnian, "that I never want information from such a source as you are." Col. Tillman lazily, but sarcastically, retorted: "1 thank God Almighty that He endowed me with enough brain not to seek information from such ignorance." More than some acerbity, mingled with hot words and ancrv r* f gesticulations that followed, members of tlio audience shouting for Tillman and Talbert, Tillman having the majority. Chairman Watkins endeavored to qniet things, but whs quietly stopped by Tillman. Chief of police also put in an oar, somewhat eflectually with the audience. DuriRg this colloquy, referring to Senator Tillman's position, Col. Talbert said he did not care what Senator Tillman thought or did?he would think for himself. The crowd numbered about 00, including manyladies, and the honors of the day go to Candidate Ansel in this home section. It was a representative gathering and it was Ausel's crowd; Tillman and Hey ward neck and neck for second place, Tillman leading. Col. Tillman was peremptorily called down several times during his speech, questioners persistent, always getting warm replies. Broke His Neck. On Wednesday a negro named Toland Workman, while riding on the top of C. N. & L. freight train, went to sleep as the train was approaching the station of Sligh's, and rolled off. It was the man's last sleep, for when he was picked up he was dead, his neck had keen broken. It was an unusual case, and merely serves to call attention to the practice of negro train hands to fall asleep on the top of cars.?The State. When paying her taxes in Rochester, N. Y. , the other day Miss Mary S. Johntown, l'a., July 12?The extent of the horrible catastrophe of the Rolling Mill mine of the Cambria Steele company is uot capable of being grasped. Early tonight, in spite of conflicting reports as to the number of dead, a careful and complete compilation L?V the Associated Press shows that 112 is tbo exact number of bodies taken from the mine. To this, futuno explorations of the mine corridors may add a few, but it cannot be many. DEAD BURIED; WORK RESUMES. Johnstown, Pa., July 13.? After a consultation this evening with the four State mine inspec tors, summoned hero to make a thorough inspection of the Rolling Mill Mine of the Cambria Steele Company, today James E. Roderick, chief of the Stnto Bureau of Miniug inspection, dictated a notice to General Manager C. S. Price, of the Cambria Company, grnnting formal permission to lesutre operations in all sections of the mine except the Klondike, in the morning. Two more deaths of rescued victims have occurred since last night. John Seher and Vasaotl Sibloia reported at the Cambria general hospital. These men were among the six living last brought out the mine Friday afternoon, of which four othors have expired. These deaths raise the total fatalities to 114, though the company records have it one less. Mine Superintendent (i. T. Robinson this evening said: "1 would not liko to assert that there are no more bodies in the mine, but 1 don't think there are. There may be a few. Allen plantation near Starr, died yesterday asternoon under peculiar circumstances. It is thought he died as a result of eating a watermelon that had been poisoned. Ho was taken violently ill about 12 o'clock and died at 4 o'clock. After bo* ing taken il' he stated that a short while beforo ho had stolen a melon flora the patch of another negro on tho place and had eaten it. The charge against the party is for murder, and Solicitor Hammer, who came hero immediately from the congressional convention at Monroe yesterday morning, took tho warrant over to tho liowan sheriff on last night's train, and it is learned hero that he was arrested last night and placed in jail. The warrant is returnable before Judge Shaw to-morrow at 10 o'clock. The arrest of this particular party was decided upon a week ago, but Judge Shaw was absent in Virginia, and only returned home Wednesday. Owing to the presence of the solicitor at Monroe that day and, his enforced presence there unti1 Saturday morning, the warrant was not signed until last night, returnable Monday. The solicitor preferred Tuesday, but .Judge Shaw has to hear a case of habens corpus on Tuesday, hence the examination at Salisbury tomorrow. That this caso is going to stir up a row there can bono doubt in the world. I have it on the best authority, that there are eleven oilier men, known to have been in the lynching, cue of them a county officer, or rather a sub-officer, and thalit is expuctedsoon to have enough legal evidence to justify their arrest. The solicitor is nnturally reticent about it, and when asked about this last pieco of in>? formation, declined to deny or affirm its accuracy, but saying that it was the hardest matter in tbo world to get a shred of legal testimony againstanv but the man arrested. He said ho could not lind out all about who was in the crowd until the probo of exact evidence was put into the reports, when all basis of legal fact would vanish into the air.
