Trip Through One < f the Most Picturesque Sectious of America. The Lehigh Valley Railroad passes through 0110 of the most picturesque sections of our country, and a trip over its route from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to Buffalo, N. Y., is well worth any one's time and money. Be. . ; ginning at the former place, this I mad follows the course of the ; river of the saute imtn > in it flows tnit?uoli the lonmntic gap of the liluo Ritlgd. l ite .Jersey Central railroad follows the same stream <>n the opposite side, the two roads crossing over at various points along the route and swapping sides, as they run up the banks of tlie stream. The river, as it flows through ; this gap, makes a great many sharp bends and the railroads curve correspondingly as they follow the course of the river. On each side rise the mountains ! Imndteds of feet above, and the railroad is confined to the nur- I row path nl tig lhe river, and for sixty miles you have this scene before you, lofty nnmn.tiins on | each side, ?\ith the river flowing, along below. After running lluw.n,!. ?l C i - i 1^,11 hit- i?>r h'nim mxiv j miles, the Lehigh switches otf and j crosses the mountains, at the j summit of which is situated the Glen Summit Hotel, one of the finest and most commodious sum iner results in the country, owned and operated hv the Lehigh Valley ('.mipunv. All through the gap jund along the line of this road I arc situated little watering places, the most important of which iMauch ( hunk, Pennsylvania, *?f which 1 shall speak latter. ' | j After leaving the Glen Sum ; mit Hotel, the railroad descends ' the mountain, ami here is opened ! up to your sight one of the pretit iest panoramas imaginable From j the griMit heights above you look down on the city of Wilkesbarre, | Pennsylvania, whicn appears to , bea little toy village in the valley ' below and which is only three or ! four miles down, but, by the ? i winding course of the railrord, | it is twenty miles or more After reaching this city, you are fairly j within the eoal fields, and, at this j point, begins another beautiful i ride, through the celehrated 'Wyoming Valley, made famous it . . e - . i?v unu m me most naroarous Indian massacres of the Revolutionary war. Through this valley flows the Upper Susquehannah River, along which the Lehigh runs until it reaches the New York line, then it courses along the eastern ridge l?y Seneca Lake to Geneva and 011 to Buffalo. This is a lovelv section of country and charming landscapes are continually presented to view all along the line. On this trip I had the pleasure of stopping over a day and night ! at Maueh Chunk, a small city situated iu the Lehigh Gap, on 1 the Lehigh and New.Iersey (Jen- 1 tral Railroad. It is the county j seat of Cathon County, Ponnsyl vania, and consists of three parts, | Mauch Chunk proper on the west, 1 Kast Munch Chunk on the east , side of the river and lTpper Mauch Chunk on a littlo mountain overlooking the other two divisions. 'PUS. ? * * i inn |nitue m hiiii mi surrounded by mountains and is reached from oither direction by graceful ami sharp bends in the river, and like curves of the railroad tracks, so i that you are in Mauch Chunk before you are avrnre of being in its vicinity. The scenery is all that one could wish for. It is indeed ? "The Switzerland of America.1' it is only nine miles from an 1 anthracite coal mine, with which it is connected hv tha hmdiu SwUcfc-gkck Raifrfad, tht ol*?t in the United States, having been constructed in 1827, to carry tho coul from the mines down to the c<>ul chutes, where it was deposited in the canal boats which were operated on the Lehigh River. The Switch-Back Read ions by gravity, its course from tho coal mines to Munch Chunk being a considerably descending slope. Since the construction of tho steam railroads through this section, tho Switch-Back has neen discontinued as a carrier of coal, and is now exclusively operated as a J pleasure route, and i- open to ! visitors from the middle of May ' to the first of November of each year. This route embraces a loop of eightem miles to and from Summit Hill, a small mining town on the i<?p of the mountains i in this vicinity. From Upper. Munch Chunk the ear runs down I a short descent to the foot of Mt. | Pisguh, the first incline, 750 feet j i hove thp sea level; and *mre you i ascend this plane. 2332 feet in i length, at the top of which you ! are 1500 feet higher above the; sea level, the car being pulled up j bv a steam engine stationed at the summit. Here indeed is a' magnificent panorama Below you is the swift stream of the Lehigh winding its wuy through the gup j to the south ward, Munch Chunk, j Kist and Upper Munch Chunk spread out. upon the slopes beneath, to the west ward are the hluo ranges of mountains in the distance, and far to the east the indistinct traces of the great Watergan of the Delaware River. Fight miles from the startingpoint, the car reaches the foot of the second incline, Mt. Jefferson. From the first to the second incline is 1(>2 feet higher than that of the first, and the incline 202 feet shorter, which makes the ascent steeper. After ascending this incline, and making a short run of a mile, the car speeds into the station at Summit Hill, a typical little mining village at the end of the line and with which is connected he electric line another little mining town, Tnntaqua, 011 the Sohuylkil River. While in this little village, don't fail to visit the coal mines and the Burning Mine. We descended into the former, watched the miners, with their lam is in their hats, busily at work with their shovels and picks digging out the black mineral. This mine is not over fifty feet deep, the entrance to which is hy an incline way of over one hundred feet long. * The Burning Mine was, also, quite a sight to 11s, and it is said that it has been burning since 1.S32. The next thing on the program was the return trip on the Switch Back which was indescribably pleasant, hein?r ano uninterrupted descent to the place of beginning, and soon we were acrain on the Lehigh speeding away for Philadelphia. Whoever takes this trip over the Lehigh, 1 would advise to stop over at Munch ('hunk and take a ride over the mountains on the Switch-Back. j G. W. A. July 20, 1901.
