Editor: Here we are in Cuba; the land of which we have ro long hoard and of which so much has been said in the last ten month*. Our regiment received order* Sunday night, the third of J: nuary, to prepare for loading transport Koumania next morning. Soon Monday the rolling up of blankets, packing knap and ' ? *7 ? haver sacks and boxing up of verything belonging to us commenced. By Monday night all of our stock, wagons and other stuff had been placed on or near the ship. Our cargo consisted of amies and horses, perhaps about t wo hundred head, wagons, ambulances, hay, oats, rations to I last for sometime, and the Lord i knows what all else A large, crowd came down and lined the dock* to sea us off next morning. At 12 o'clock noon the order to ; "lot loose" was given and the i old boat with the 2nd. S. C. Kegt. j moved off amid cheers and God, speed. Our band discoursed grand and patriotic music au we , moved along down the river. "Star Spangle Banner", "Auld Lang Syne" and "Dixie" Hosted on the air, an 1 stirred our hearts to true patriotism. Tine tug boat pulled ii# out and then cut loose after pooling us across the liar and al lowed us to go our wsv alone. The trip aeross, lasted until Thursday night. We ran up 'near Havana at about 12 o'clock i Thursday night but did not eater the harbor until next morning. Most of the boys got sea aick, f some directly after starting and .others not until wn got well on the way. The transport on which we took passage, was a miserable old affair, that whs doubtless a condemned cattle ship. We wore crowded together in the hole of ths vessel, where ventillation was out of the question, and after a days' travel the sickening odor iwai almost unbearable A great Many of those who were able to do to stayed on the top deck day ?..,i i ?i? *? ii<t 111l;111 1111 iiiw inron preuy well. The rations wo had cons i?ted of canned beef, ham, beans, coffee in small <pi\ntitv, and hard tack. When 1 sav that canned beef and henna in considered by a soldier the most disagreeable food he can taue, I roice the sentiment of every man in the army. We urow tired of those things Ion* ago. However, we nil polled through safe. We rode into tha beautiful harbor directly after sunrise The weather was tieautiful. fair and balmy. Wc passed the majestic Morro castle, built upon a high promontory on the left aide of the harlmr entrance We commenced to tinloe.ui directly after turning up at the wharf and matched up into tho town. Here v.e ;*?*k.1 arms and teased thu natives for several hour*. Finally at about 2 o'clock wo started on the march out to camp, a distance of about Mix or *evcn miles. We were n pretty hungry sat hefore starting on the march, not having had anything to eat since break* fast. and after reaching our camp* tng grounds, we were all ravenously hungry. W e were given more haanii, canned beef andmard tack, i Then we commenced to piteh lants and get straight. ' Before 1 go too far I want to describe the city of Havana, or th? pait we came through, and the country between thers and camp. Uavana'a women aro given up by nearly all of ur to he the moat beautiful women we evor saw, . as A whole. Of course m America wo have some mighty pretty women, hut there are not so many as kere. Black hair, th* grandest and most enchanting black or lirown eyes, pretty teeth and divine figures. The houaea 1' are built mostly of mortar, but hare the appearance of magnificent atone buildings- The windows C and door* are large and all have iron bars like prisons. The young ,J ladies look through tho bars at us h as we pass along and ware hand- % kerchiefs and fans. There are tl several distinct classes of people ir here. They all speak Spanish and o know nothing about English. o There are the coal black negroes and then the mixed people of every ^ shade, the working class of poor p whites and the hiirh tnnad w#?ll dressed rich. si On nil sides of the principle, 1 ^ streets magnificent buildings, j ; private and public, greeted the j ^ eye. The loveliest pirks and | groves with beautiful tropical j ^ flowers and trees, were passed on ; our route. The country aeeius to j ^ be a long lost paradise as far an ! the eve can reach. Green hills . - jo and vales, studdad about with fine , edifices and groves of palms, ban- i , nanoes and other tropical vegeta- i tion. Green grass, taaneling corn, j tobacco, maize, etc., grows 'n ! \ abundance along the wavsidi. I . ? I'he Sviil i* the richest I ever saw. j .
