Mk. Editor: Here we are in
Cuba; the land of which we have
ro long hoard and of which so
much has been said in the last ten
month*. Our regiment received
order* Sunday night, the third of
J: nuary, to prepare for loading
transport Koumania next morning.
Soon Monday the rolling
up of blankets, packing knap and

haver sacks and boxing up of
verything belonging to us commenced.
By Monday night all
of our stock, wagons and other
stuff had been placed on or near
the ship. Our cargo consisted of
amies and horses, perhaps about
t wo hundred head, wagons, ambulances,
hay, oats, rations to I
last for sometime, and the Lord i
knows what all else A large,
crowd came down and lined the
dock* to sea us off next morning.
At 12 o'clock noon the order to ;
"lot loose" was given and the i
old boat with the 2nd. S. C. Kegt. j
moved off amid cheers and God,
speed. Our band discoursed
grand and patriotic music au we ,
moved along down the river. "Star
Spangle Banner", "Auld Lang
Syne" and "Dixie" Hosted on the
air, an 1 stirred our hearts to true
patriotism. Tine tug boat pulled
ii# out and then cut loose after
pooling us across the liar and al
lowed us to go our wsv alone.
The trip aeross, lasted until
Thursday night. We ran up
'near Havana at about 12 o'clock
i Thursday night but did not eater
the harbor until next morning.
Most of the boys got sea aick,
f some directly after starting and
.others not until wn got well on
the way. The transport on which
we took passage, was a miserable
old affair, that whs doubtless a
condemned cattle ship. We wore
crowded together in the hole of
ths vessel, where ventillation was
out of the question, and after a
days' travel the sickening odor

the march out to camp, a distance

had anything to eat since break*

pretty women, hut there are not
so many as kere. Black hair,
th* grandest and most enchanting
black or lirown eyes, pretty teeth

are built mostly of mortar, but
hare the appearance of magnificent

and door* are large and all have
iron bars like prisons. The young ,J

know nothing about English. o
There are the coal black negroes
and then the mixed people of every ^
shade, the working class of poor p
