POETRY. . THE ROBIN'S HEATH. X BEAUTIFUL POEM?BY MR.*. K. 8. 8MITII. From his sweet hanquit, mid the pel fumed clover 4 A Robin soured and sung; Never the voice ofhappy bard or lover, Such penis of gladness rung. Lone echo, loitoring by the distant hill-side, Or hiding in the glen, Caught up, with thirsting lip the tide of sweetness, Then bade it flow again. The Summer air was flooded with the music; Winds hold their breath to hear ; Aud blushing wild-flowers held their heads, er.amor, To list that "joyance clear." JuhI then, from neighboring covert rudely ringing, Broke forth discordant sound ; And wily fowler horn the nmbu.-h springing, 1- 1 vu^uii* uivtmu. Still upward through the air tlmt yet was thrilling To his niolodious Ihv, One yistant longer, on a trembling pinion, The robin cleared his way, But, ah, the death-shot rankled in his bosom? Ilis life of song is o'er! Back, back to earth, from out his heavenwaid path-way, He fell, to rise no more. A sudden stillness chilled the heart of nature? Leaf, blossom, bird and bee, Seemed each, in startled hush, to mourn tin pausing 01 thut sweet minstrelsy. And Echo, breathless, in her secret dwelling, Like love-lorn lir.tid, in vain Waited and listened long, to catch the accent She ne'er would hear again. Oh, tail d! sweet poet of the summer woodlands! How like thy lay to those Of tuneful bards, whose song, begun in gladness Have oft the saddest close. Thus, many a strain of human love and rapture, l'oured from a fond, full heart, Hath been, in one wild moment, hushed forever By sorrow's fatal dart. Friendship, Truth, and Love Three sunny Islets on life's river, Three golden arrows in life's quiver; Three stars that never fade or dim, Three notes that angels love to hymn ; Three charms that guard the hear t from sorrow Three whispers of a bright to-morrow; Three links that hind with silken bands. Three words whose might should nde nil lands: Three watchwords on life's stormy st amis, Three harbors 'mill earth's treacherous sands Three life-preservers on Time's ocean, Three voices 'mid the heart's commotion ; Three flagrant flowers most fair to see, Three garlands twining round life's tree; Three eems of nnre i>tlinriu1 Three paths, all lovely, smooth atiJ bright; Throe rays of light fioin heaven's throne, Where naught but happiness is known!
