POETRY.
. THE ROBIN'S HEATH.
X BEAUTIFUL POEM?BY MR.*. K. 8. 8MITII.
From his sweet hanquit, mid the pel fumed clover
4 A Robin soured and sung;
Never the voice ofhappy bard or lover,
Such penis of gladness rung.
Lone echo, loitoring by the distant hill-side,
Or hiding in the glen,
Caught up, with thirsting lip the tide of sweetness,
Then bade it flow again.
The Summer air was flooded with the music;
Winds hold their breath to hear ;
Aud blushing wild-flowers held their heads, er.amor,
To list that "joyance clear."
JuhI then,from neighboring covert rudely ringing,
Broke forth discordant sound ;
And wily fowler horn the nmbu.-h springing,
1- 1
vu^uii* uivtmu.
Still upward through the air tlmt yet was thrilling
To his niolodious Ihv,
One yistant longer, on a trembling pinion,
The robin cleared his way,
But, ah, the death-shot rankled in his bosom?
Ilis life of song is o'er!
Back, back to earth, from out his heavenwaid
path-way,
He fell, to rise no more.
A sudden stillness chilled the heart of nature?
Leaf, blossom, bird and bee,
Seemed each, in startled hush, to mourn tin
pausing
01 thut sweet minstrelsy.
And Echo, breathless, in her secret dwelling,
Like love-lorn lir.tid, in vain
Waited and listened long, to catch the accent
She ne'er would hear again.
Oh, tail d! sweet poet of the summer woodlands!
How like thy lay to those
Of tuneful bards, whose song, begun in gladness
Have oft the saddest close.
Thus, many a strain of human love and rapture,
l'oured from a fond, full heart,
Hath been, in one wild moment, hushed forever
By sorrow's fatal dart.
Friendship, Truth, and Love
Three sunny Islets on life's river,
Three golden arrows in life's quiver;
Three stars that never fade or dim,
Three notes that angels love to hymn ;
Three charms that guard the hear t from sorrow
Three whispers of a bright to-morrow;
Three links that hind with silken bands.
Three words whose might should nde nil lands:
Three watchwords on life's stormy st amis,
Three harbors 'mill earth's treacherous sands
Three life-preservers on Time's ocean,
Three voices 'mid the heart's commotion ;
Three flagrant flowers most fair to see,
Three garlands twining round life's tree;
Three eems of nnre i>tlinriu1
Three paths, all lovely, smooth atiJ bright;
Throe rays of light fioin heaven's throne,
Where naught but happiness is known!

Origine of the Names of the State.
Tho New York Sunday Times, at con

ing information relative to the derivation:
of the names of tho States :
Maine was first called Marvooshcn, but
about 1038, took the name it now bean
front Maine, a province in the west o
Fraoe. The name is originally derivet
from the Cenoinnuni, an ancient Gv 11 i?

hy patent, in 10 9, and was derived trow
the patentee, who was Governor of Ports
mouth, in Hampshire, England. Ver
mont is from verd. trreen. anil mnni
mountain. Massachusetts was namec
from a tribe of Indians in the vicinity o
Boston. Roger Williams says the wore
signifies blue hills. Rhode Island was s<
called in 1044, in relation to tho islam
of Rhodes in tho Mediterranean. New
York was named in honor of the Duke o
York, to whom this teritory was granted
Pennsylvania was called after Win. Penn
In 1684, tho Duke of York made a grant
of what is now the State of New Jersey,
to Lord Berkley and Sir George Cartarel
and it received its name in compliment to
the latter w ho had been Governor of the

in 1002, after Lord De La Ware.?
Maryland was natneJ in honor of Henrietta
Marin, Queen of Charles I., in his
patent to Lord Baltimore, June, 3, 1632.
Virginia was ealled after the virgin Queen
of England, Elizabeth. The Carolines
were named by the French, in hor.or of
Charles IX., of France. Gcorgi * was called
in 1692, after George II. Louisiana
was named after Louis XIV., of Franco.
Florida received its name from Ponce De
Leon, in 1512, while ou his voyage in

of "Hunter's Medical Manual," says : "Thou
sands upon thousands of our yopth, by evi
example and the influence of the passions
have been led into the habit of self-pollutiot
without realizing the sin and fearful con so
qucnces upon themselves and their posterity
The constitutions of thousands who an
raising families have been enfeebled, if no
broken down, and they do not know tin
cause or the cure. Any thing that can b<
done so t?? enlighten and influence the pub
lie mind as to check, and ultimately to re
move this wide-spread source of hiunui
wretchedness, would confer the greatcs
blessing next to the religion of Jesus Christ
on the present and coining generations. In
temperance, (or the use of intoxicatinj
