?d of ail opportunities for educating their daughters ii^ Lancaster, our people are fortunate, in having the privilege ot availing themselves of the advantages of a school so near them, and of one so well conducted, thereby giving it such a laudable reputation as Lewisville Seminary. Mot lay and BlackledgeThese unfortunate young men, who were sentenced to death for the cruel butchery of a negro in Colleton District, some few months ago, were to have been hone at VVnl terborough on Friday last. They have influential friends, and it was thought efforts would be made in their transit from Charleston, (where they were eonfined) to Wnlterborough, to effect their escape. To provide for such attempt, they Wore guarded by detachments of Artillery and Infantry from the city. There is no doubt but they were safely c; rried to Wultetborough, nnd executed on Friday. It is Raid that even up to the hour of their starting, the prisoners expressed a confident belief that they would be rescued or shot by their friends, before they could ! e hung. BeTolationary History of North Carolina. The Publisher and Compiler, has very s kindly sent us a book with the above till". It consists of " three lectures, delivered by Iter. Francis L. Hawkes, Hon. David I.. Swain, and Hon. Win. A. Graham, to which is prefixed a preliminary sketch of the battle of Aiamancoj compiled by Win. D. Cook." We have been much entertained by the perusal of this book. T he lectures arc able productions, nnd as each, though confined to the Revolutionary History of North Carolina, hns reference to different periods, much knowledge is acquired of the early struggles and patriotism of the good people of the Old North State. Perhaps we may complain of -- the adulating manner in which Old Kip is treated, but when we consider that all three of the d'stiilgulslud lecturers w*e,c natives !of her noil, wo jicld to tin* vlitiui of Statu pride. The IjisUri.in In Ivishing praise. when pr.iiaa is due, Hhould also ne?er shrink from rebuking, when censure is deserved. We j like the book though, and our good opinion of old Mecklenburg is more firmly cstab- ' lished from the knowledge derived from these pages of the early settlers. The Mecklenburg Declaration us the precursor of the Declaration of Independence, ratified by Congress, deservedly gives old Rip a char sctcr which her people are and should be proud of. The evidence produced by Mr. Haw kes, esn leave no doubt on the mind, bm tl at the p-ople of Mecklenburg county, at their Court House In Charlotte, formally declared ! themselves independent on tho 'JOth day of March.
