The city of Baltimore is soon to celebrate the anniversary of its establishment. The municipal campaigns in New Yo?k and our neighbor, Au gusta, are unusually exciting this year. Mrs. Cow Ellerbe heads the list of ladies composing the reception committee at the coming State ball. President David Starr Jordan, of Leland Stanford, Jr, University, writing in the current number of the North American Review, quotes Bismarck as having once eaid:s "One-third of the students in the German universities destroy themselves by dissipation, one third wetr themselves out by overwork, and the rest govern Eu rope." President Jordan parap hrases in the case of American college students in this way : One part go to the dogs, one part to the grave, and the rest are the strength of the Republic." Horses cannot be hiied at any price in Whitman County, Washington, where 1,500,000 bushels of grain were harvested in one week r?ceutly. Tho grain was valued at $1,050,000, and the indications were that with good weather the next week's record would excel that, but it was almost impossible to get horses enough to cart the grain. About Takua, in the same State, thrashers have been so scarce that large cash bonuses have been offered for them. Sunday's Augusta Chronicle had the following society note which will be read with interest by Ex Gov. Evans's friends in Aiken County: "The engagment of Ex Governor John Gary Evans to Miss Emily Plump, of Connecticut, is announced. The marriage will be on Dec. 14 and will be a brilliant affair. Mi?s Plume was one of Ihe most popular and admired visitor iii the city last winter. Cultured and charming in manner she made many friends, who will be delighted to welcome her to the South. When i youug raaideu is about to be narried, immediately before she steps across the threshold of her )ld home on her way to the church. ier mother solemnly gives her a new pocket handkerchief. The i>ride holds in her hand throughout the marriage ceremony, using it to wipe away her tears. So soon as the marriage festivities are ended the young wife lays the hand kerchief aside iu her linen closet md there it remains as long as 3he lives. Nothiug could induce \ Tyrolese wife to UBO this sacred handkerchief. It may be half a century, or longer, before it is taken from its place to fulfil the 3econd and last part of its mission. When the wife dies, perhaps as a gray old grandmothp", the loving hands of the next c. kin place the bridal handkerchief over the face of the dead and it is buried with her in the grave.
