Remember, this is "swearing ofl" day. "As luck would have it," William Luck, of Roanoke, Va., w?s presented with four babies Christ m ?s Eve by Mrs. Luck. At an election held in Union, this State, last Friday, the dispensary was voted back into the county by a f-in all majority?11 votes. The total vote cast was 1217. Too Union Times says it was the "hardest fought battle in the history cf Union county". As We fared hotter than our esteemed Columbia contemporary. Our suspended hosiery contained, among other tilings, four bottles of Tine liquor mid three box es of Havana cigars. While we ; do not expect the liquid tokens to last as long as the fragrant smokers, this beir.g a "dry" town where every thirst is able Hie contest was so close me re suit may possibly he changed by the official count this week, lr-j regularities iiave already been reported ill ome precincts. W:.at is known as the "tenhour" h?bor law goes into effect today. Under its provisions cot ton mill operathes will be required to work only sixty hours per week or ten hours per day. The act does not apply to "mechanics, engineer!", firemen, watchmen teamsters, yard employes and clerical torce." THE LANC bodied, we are not disposed to J compluin as did a certain Indian chief lu a far Western reservation years ago, who on viewing ' a fresh arrival of governmentsupplies Is ting of sixteen ' barrels cr ikey and one barrel of llour, indignantly exclaimed: " What the h?1 did they send all this Hour here fori" THF NFH/ YFAD. We enter upon a new year today. This is the time when m >n not only take stock of their worldly goods and possessions, but also of their Spiritual attainments is well. If the spiritual inventory is not found to be satisfactory, tlien men mike New Year resolutions. If, on the other land, the showing is sa'isfac'orv. "hen they congratulate thomselves and reach out in the coming year for an enlarged life of usefulness. There are three points of view from which a man should look at his life. First, he should live for his God. This will make liini a man of fixed principles, of right morals and an humble believer. By thus living he will be bet ter able to carry out, the second view of life, which is that he s iouIu live for his family. Man is a social being and is set in families. He should seek to provide for the material comfort and convenience of his family, lor the rearing ot his children in good morals, manners and met v. Somebody must have "handed h lemon" to the talented and scholarly editor of the Columbia State, through the medium of his Christmas st cHing, judging from the following, found in the State's editorial columns of last Friday: Of course it is gratifying to he remembered by one's friends, and it may seem uimracious to question the timeliness of any /lit at this season, but candor compels the admission that, wo are not partial to lemonade in winter, and the lemon will not keep till summer. and the only way he can successfully accomplish these ends, is lor himself to practice morality and good manners at home. Ileuoe, the homo is the center of the moral, educational and I religious jife of a community. I So let us all resolve to have good homes, and then we will be able to see tho third point of view of life, namely, that a man should live for his oounfry. lie should see that her material prosperity isdeveloped, her laws just and enforced, her morals right and clean.
