The first thing he did to the soil was to "break it up" to the depth ot eighteen in choB, using a two hor-o plough drawn by a couple ot heavy, stout mules. This was followed by thorough harrowing. The land was then prepared for planting, the rows being made five leet apart and the corn planted a foot apart in the drill. A light application ot commercial fertilizers was made at the time of planting, only about 100 pounds to the acre. The corn was planted on the 18th day ot May, and in less than two months the crop i was "laid by," the plant having become too rank to admit of fur iher cultivation. The corn was ploughed or worked only three times. Fertilizer was applied during cultivation, but not ex ceeding 300 pounds to the acre wore used altogether, includingI the application at the time of planting. The field now presents the appearance of rich river bottom loom. Tlie stalks contain from two to lour larce, well-developed ears, an unsually large per cent, ot them hearing four ears each. 1 here are apparently more stalks I with three ears than with two.
