I < Reported for The News by Mr. < Sam. F. Maseey. < The county reunion of Confed < erate Veterans was held near 1 Caston's school house, at Flint Ridge Baptist church, on Thurs- t day. An early train landed the ' Lancaster contingent at Heath 1 Springs uboul eight o'clock. ' % Thence they were transported by i wagons to the place of meeting. < There was a meeting of the Ju- 1 nior Order of American Median- < ics as well as of Veterans. t Before the general speaking the Veterans met and nominated four places at which to hold the next reunion: Dixie received 20 votes, Heath Springs 13, Pleasant. Hill 7, Elgin 6. It was then determined to assemble next year j at Dixie. < The Juniors formed in two , ranks at 10 :30 a. m , numbering | about one hundred. The Veter- | ans marched through the opened ranks to the stand ard were , seated conveniently to hear the , speakers. Hon. George W. Jones was j master of ceremonies and Mr. J. , S. Wilson was in charge of the Juniors: the old soldiers were headed by the veterau Captain J. Q. McManu3. Many ladies lent their beauty and encouragement to the occasion: about, a thousand people were assembled. Comparatively pleasant weather was a great factor in the ei'joyment jlWMday. Werner, made the the address of welcome, making everybody leel as easy as an old shoe; W. G. A. Porter responded on behalf of veterans. Mr. Weaner was very entertaining as well as hearty and familiar in his address. Mr. Porter extended a cordial invitation to all people to attend next reunion at Dixie. Hon. D. E. Finlev, our popular Congressman, then entertained the crowd with well chosen and suitable remarks. lie spoke to the veterans in an affectionate manner and assured them that; they were in the right during the war : as usual his address was all that could have been asked lor or expected. The meeting was then turned over to the Juniors who invited j the c-owd to dinner in groups; around their various vehicles.? Some squatted on the ground around a rustic spread; some stood up and ate from baskets; and all made themselves ea*v and devoured stacks ol provender. After dinner speeches were t made to the .Juniors by Messrs Finley, G B. Timmormau and Z. P. Smith. These speeches were instructive as well as enter-; V : La: LEDGER J LY. Gaining; and they were wel *ened to. It is safe to assert that aever whs a more oiderly c if a thoutoind where. Everybody was md respectful. Not an ang joisterous expression was 1 mi the grounds.
