^ Deaths in Chesterfield. Carolina Citizen: Mrs. Eliza beth llollev, wile of Mr. J. 11 Holley, died at her home about three miles south ol Jefferson last Saturday alter being sic* three weeks with typhoid fever. Mrs. llollev was a (laughter of Mr. .John Jones and her Home was near Catarrh until she was married to Mr. Holley 33 years ago. She was about 48 years at the time of her death. As these words are written (Thursday) there is a general ' feeling of sadness and gloom over the town by reason ot the death of Mr. W. E. Haley, which occurred at Knowlton Infirmary, Columbia, Wednesday morning at 7 o'clock. Mr. Haley had been in very poor health for more than a year and it was in vain that he sought relief at different springs and health resorts. He went to Columbia Sunday August 4 and underwent an operation for some stomach trouble on the following Saturday. */ * Mr. Haley was a sen of Mr. Andrew Haley who live! in the northern part of Kershaw county. Had he lived until the 14th ol next Sept. he would have been 50 year of age. lie lias resided at different places but his home ha? never been very far from Jefferson. lie moved here about five years ?go. He married a daughter of Mr. J. N. Jowera. Vacancy at West Point? Tillman to Make Appointment. The State: Senator Tillman has an appointment to make to the United States Military academy at West Point this summer and in order to give the many worthy young men of the State an opportunity to secure this most desirable ? place he will hold a competitive examination at the office of Hon. O. B. Martin, State superintendent of education, Columbia, at 10 a.m., August 29, to select a principal and two alternates. This examination is open to bona fide residents of this Stato between the ages of 17 arid 22 years. No candidate can be admitted to the academy who is less than 5 leet 4 inches in height^ at the age of 17, or 5 feet 5 inches in height at the age of 18 and upwards. The mental examination will include algebra, plane geometry, T.V ?1 . 1- ? rmgiisn grammar, geography and history (United States and an cien').
