2 Agricultural Experience with Vetch. Southern Cultivator. 1 have been here at the State University tor three year.-; have a fine farm and good stock in which 1 take great inteiest. 1 see so much inquiry about vetch I thought 1 would give my experience, which would, perhaps, encourage some one else to give it a trial as 1 think it one of our best forage plants. On iast October the 10th, 1 planted five acres in vetch, wheat and winter oats mixed. I first broke my land with two jiood mules ah in emit' inches deep, crossed cut it with disk harrow, then sowed 500 pounds high-grade fertilizer per acre, then mixed three bushels oats, one bushel wheat, one half bushel vetch and sowed all together per acre on one acre, then covered with smoothing harrow with drtij; attached to level the ground. By Christmas 1 had as fine grazing as 1 ever saw, fully six inches high, and as thick a> if rr?ii 1 ?1 Kf.inlr nn the around. 1 had fifteen milk cows which were turned on the patch every morning lor one hour; at the end ot one hour every cow had all she wanted. The five acres gave constant grazing up to March 1st. Then I took the cows otr and June 10 I cut two tons of as fine bay as I ever saw per acre. I found that cows, hor-es and hogs were all very fond of it, and I know it increased uiy milk and butter yield luily one-third. I consider th ?t I was paid in the increase ot milk and butter and grazing for fertilizer, seed and planting and tlie ha\* w?sh\ clear profit and 20 cents p >r ton gave me 40 per acre. Now, tannery I what cm yon find that will beat this? Will state further that 1 had twelve calves that stayed on and grazed every day, also three head of horses that were grazed lor one or two hours every day on the five acres. When 1 cut the vetch and t ats 1 broke and harrowed 'he land, planted corn and now have a line prospect lor a good eorn crop. Next October 1 expect to try another plan and ask what y >u think of it. I will break and harrow my land.; Iiir It All ' n* .Iro ixiit t .?t? V VI* I M i ? V III- IV 9 J* i 1 4* tilizer in drill, sow one row otts and one row vetch. The open furrow plan.
