".'lie Hodges letter to Tillman, fj v.thicli appears elsewhere, t ."makes interesting reading and j( ?r>tliat reason we publish it, c _"?! A I I ,.<ma uot oecause we uy any n jcie-ans endorse all that he says, ^hiiike Mr. Hodges, we have ^ :i?**er been what he styles a '"TSllmanite," but we have entfrfr*vored at all times to give Mr. "Oilman exact just ice, praising him a ^w^n in our judgment he merited 1 j,j?rai3e and censuring him when ' h?f deserved censure. And while are opposed to the state dis- 1 }#ensary, we do not blame Till ? mas, as does Mr. llodges. tor fltofending the institution on the 1 ako mp or els'where. Tillman is * osponsible for (he establishment o4 the dispensary system in ( 5J^uth Carolina ami is therefore ' l|&rfectly natural that he should ^ Jkvud by it. when its very exis.wee is in jeopardy, honestly Believing as he no doubt does v,b?t the dispensary can be puri ^ jled and yet. made "th s best sotoVjon ot the liquor question." He are satistie 1 that he is mis token?that the dispensary can utyyer be purged of ifs ''corrupt jiwl corrupting" intluence, but , m give Tillman credit for sincvadv believing otherwise. And i re not alone in his belief, as I 1 Kvnenced by the fact that some I ak l ne best men in the sta'e are t tinning lor high olli.-e on a dis-L >Misacv nlat form ? I ? I I VIE NEW DEPOT? <'Ol)NCiL AND f JTIZENS TO MEET TO CONSID- I'1 Ell PLANS. L The committeo of aldermen to ?hom was referred the Southern's 4 *i&ns for a new depot at Lan- i tester requests that the entire s )o;incil and all citizens inter-1 ^ o wted in the matter meet iH the court house next Monday 1 y afternoon at 4 o'clock, when t he' 'sonimittee will make its report. L, i O t is of the utmost importance i n bar this meeting be attended by he representative business and * ?*ofe3sional men of the commu- ^ wty. [f tho depot plans are not *'*at the\ should be, now is the J ti for the people of Lancaster kick. Don't wait until the ^ I'^ot shall be built and then b my it should have bene so and b \ o. The railroad commission as given Lancaster an opportuity to express its approval <> isapproval of the building tb outhern proposes to erect ai L is highly important that acion of some kind be taken witli(it further delay. The railroad company's plans nay be ail right or they may be pen to serious objection, but mless the people of Lancaster uvesligate Ineni now, while the opportunity is presented, they all not know what kind of a [epot the town is to have until he building is in course of conduction, when it will he too :ite to enter protest or request ny changes that may be desired. r ..<.... :.-.f lost progressive towns in the fate and it is steadily growing ay by day. The new depot, lierefore, should not only be a redit to Lancaster of today, ut it should be such a struc'ure s will be creditable to the town ir years to come. It should be esigned to meet both present nd future needs and require lents. In view of the importance of his matter we earnestly urge iie citizens of the community o attend the meeting at the ourt house next Monday auerioou. 'ROWING SENTIMENT AGAINST BUCKET SHOPS. The confession a clay or two go by Paying Teller Chisolm, of he First National Bank of Birmngham, Ala., that he is a default r to the extentof $97,000 affords resh evidence of the need of general legislation against cotton ixchanges and bucket shops, for t is stated that the money was ost in speculating through such concerns. Probably three fourths >f the defalcations reported now days are due to patronage of mcket shops and kindred estab lsliments. Growing out ot the Chisolm natter, criminal proceedings jave been instituted in Birmingiam against certain "commis.ion men," charging them with liding and abetting in the embezzlement. A ptess dispatch mm Birmingham says: ' The feeling against Cotton uul Stock exchanges, where, it is uleged, Ohisnlin lost the s'olen noney has become so pronounced bat sixteen out <>t eighteen al lermtiii ot Birmingham today mnoiincod lheir determination o vote at to-morrow night's ession of the city council against he issuance of license to any ommi-sion house dealing in uteres in the city ot Birming1am. The pro[)osed new ordiiance is to go into elFeet October 1." Another dispatch states that, 'it is now certain that the com ng legisl iture will adopt bucket hop legislation as a result of lefalcation of paving teller Chis >lm,of tlie First National bank." So it is likely that Alabama /ill be the next state to follow ieorgia's example. What about iovhii uarouna? Will this state ot elect a legislature thiyear dedged to drive out bucket hops? ft very candidate tor tbe agislature sliould tell the peo le bow he stands on thisimporant matter. A dispatch, bv the way, from kUgusta, (ia, states that "the rokers of Augusta have a plan y which they propose to evade the Boykin anti bucket phop law. They plan to move just across the Savannah river when . law goes in'o effec^and conuie their operations from the . .uih Carolina side by the use of telephones. It is understood that quotations will be furnished the city of Augusta by the use of tickers " The Georgia anti-bucket shop law does not go into effect 11 tijiI the first of next January. Our legislature meets, we believe, ihe 2nd Tuesday in the same month. If, therefore, our lawmakers will, promptly upon as sembling, pass a law similar to Georgia's, South Carolina will not b ' used as a dumping ground lor Georgia's tabooed bucket shops.
