Kick Back with Weekend Excursion Welcome Week Concert Carolina Productions brings Raleigh-based Weekend Excursion to USC. While attending Appalachian State University, members of the band juggled classes with weekend road trips and managed to release three CDs. In the year after graduation, the band expanded its touring from Florida to Washington, D.C. The band has also opened for Melissa Etheridge and Sister Hazel and had songs featured on MTV’s "Real World" and WB’s "Dawson’s Creek." Davis Field, by Longstreet Theater. 8-11 p.m. Free. Fall Out Columbia hosts major rock bands ' CONTINUED FROM PAGE B1 GOOD CHARLOTTE Good Charlotte is a rambunc tious quintet hailing from An napolis, Maryland. This young rock band com bines semi-auto-graphical lyrics with raucous three-chord guitar riffs to create an ambitious sound rooted in punk. The band found acclaim early in its career when its single "Lit tle Things" made its way to WPLY in Philadelphia. The song played 15 nights in a row, helping Good Charlotte win a demo contest. The victory allowed the group to tour with bigger names in their genre such as Blink 182, New Found Glory, Sum 41 and Jimmy Eat World. Its newest video, “Festival Song,” is featured on the Playsta tion 2/X Box game NHL Hitz. STROKE 9 Movie Local theaters offer hidden treasures CONTINUED FROM PAGE B1 GENERAL CINEMAS DUTCH SQUARE 14 Dutch Square is where it seems most of Columbia goes to see movies. It generally gets all True salesmen, Stroke 9 boosted its record sales by hitting malls all over San Francisco and asking teenagers to listen to its music. Stroke 9’s growing local recog nition created a buzz that allowed the band to perform in Ron Howard’s 1999 film EdTV. Stroke 9’s major debut Nasty Little Thoughts was released at the end of 1999, but still remains in heavy rotation at modem rock stations across the United States. The band’s music includes el ements of rock, pop, folk and even reggae. Its latest single, “Kick Some Ass,” can be heard regularly on 93.5. PUDDLE OF MUDD When lead singer Wesley Scantlin approached Fred Durst, lead vocalist of Limp Bizkit, with Puddle of Mudd’s demo tape, pa tience was the last thing on his mind. Scantin’s assertiveness helped the band sign with Durst’s new label, Flawless Records. Puddle of Mudd describes its signature sound as “real emo tional rock and roll music that’s hardcore,” comparing it to punk the newest blockbuster releases. One of the more notable ad vantages of Dutch Square is that its concession stand has the widest variety of snacks in town. Besides the regular fare, it also serves everything from dill pickles the size of baked potatoes to coffee at an internal coffee bar to self-serve candy by the pound.
