He made the ODP Region III pool along with his brother. “Jonathan is another versatile player who can play in the back, in the midfield or upfront,” Berson said. “He is very com posed and reads the game well and will certainly help us in the midfield or the back this season.” Modesto, Calif., native Ryan Daley will see time at forward for the Game cocks in 2000. Daley played soccer at Grace M. Davis High School in Modesto but will be graduated from the Braden ton Academy in Bradenton, Fla. This is the same school that produced Carolina midfielder Tim Glowienka. As a Spartan at Davis High School, Daley was named All-Central California Conference during his freshman, sopho more and junior seasons. He scored over 15 points during his first three years of high school. He was also a member of the U.S. under-17 national team. “Ryan has the ability to score goals at any time,” Berson said. “We will need his abilities with the loss of our top three scorers from last year.” Jack Cummings hails from Cincin nati and will see action in the midfield for USC in 2000. Among Cummings’ individual awards are being named to the adidas ESP event after his junior year and also playing on the Region II ODP team. At Summit Country Day School, Cummings’ squad were Ohio state champions, and he was named to the all-city team. Cumming? also earned first-team all conference honors in 1999. The 6-foot 1 forward played club soccer for the Cincinnati Premier squad. “Jack is a technical player who is very composed and has good vision,” Berson said. “He is a versatile player who can play in the center or the outside of the midfield or in the center of the back. He is an excellent passer of the ball.” Raymore, Mo., native Ryan Barber is a 6-foot-2 defender. Barber attended Ray more Peculiar High in Peculiar, Mo., while lettering four years in soccer and two in golf. Barber earned first-team all-confer ence honors for three straight seasons, al so earning first team all-district honors during his junior and senior seasons. Dur ing Barber’s senior season, he was named to the second-team all-metro and first team allstate. This spring, Barber will make an appearance with the Canadian National under-20 team. “Ryan has good size and agility, and he lias played every position on the field,” Berson said. “He is an excellent attack ing player in the air.” . The eight signees will first see action on Aug. 26 when USC travels to the Soc cer Showcase in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Gamecocks will face Notre Dame to kick off the 2000 season. Volleyball USC assistant coach Scott Sanctel was named the head women’s volleyball coach at Northern Michigan Wednesday. Sandel, the ninth head coach in 26 years at NMU, will begin his duties March 10. Sandel has been an assistant under head coach Kim Christopher since 1997. During his tenure, the Gamecocks fin ished second in the SEC Eastern division and advanced to postseason play twice. Football The USC football team will play a two-game home and home football se ries with the University of Virginia be ginning in the 2002 season. The Gamecocks will travel to Char lottesville to play the Cavaliers cm Sept. 7,2002 and then host U\A the follow ing season on Sept. 6 in Columbia. Both contests will be the second game of the season for USC, years in which the Game cocks will have a 12-game schedule. Recent NCAA legislation permits Di vision 1-A schools to play 12 football contests during those years in which there are 14 Saturdays from the first permis sible playing date through the last play ing date in November. That will also be the case in 2008,2013,2014 and 2019. USC and UVA have met 32 times over the years, with die Gamecocks hold ing a 20-11-1 lead in the series. The last meeting came in 1987 at Colum bia, with USC winning 58-10. Also, head coach Lou Holtz’s con tract was not rolled over after his 0-11 initial season, leaving him four years on his current contract. Athletics Di rector Mike McGee apparently adhered to his policy of not extending contracts for coaches with losing seasons, but how ever did extend the contract of offensive coordinator Skip Holtz. Skip Holtz’s contract received a rollover because of a previous condition, agreed to at his hiring. Although his fa ther did not receive either a raise or an extra year, Lou Holtz will still make about $1 million dollars annually from his total financial package. Track & Field The USC women vaulted back up to No. 2 in the final indoor Trackwire poll released today. The Texas women re gained the No. 1 spot after sliding down to No. 4 last week. LSU, the former No. 1, fell all the way to No. 6 after finishing fourth at the SEC Championships last weekend. The USt men jumped up to No. 10 in the men’s final poll. Arkansas' men continue to reign as No. Lon the men’s side. v There are nine SEC men's teams and seven women's teams in the final Track wire poll. The South Carolina men and women will compete at the USA Championships in Atlanta this weekend before return ing to Fayetteville, Ark., for the NCAA Indoor Championships March 10-11. Carolina has won six straight match es over the Tigers, dating back to the Gamecocks' 5-4 triumph in 1994. Last year, USC downed Clemson 8-1. Carolina (8-3, 2-0 SEC) leads the all-time series 18-15 and holds an 11-6 advantage in Columbia. Clemson (6-1) has not-beaten USC in Columbia since 1992. Also, in all athletics for the 1999 2000 season, Clemson holds an 8-1 ad vantage over USC, the one exception being women’s track. Leading Carolina is No. 14 Katari na Markovski. A sophomore from Val jevo. Yugoslavia, Markovski (10-1) should meet No. 15 Carmina Giraldo (5 0) at No. 1 singles. Also ranked for Car olina is Jennifer Radnian (No. 75) and Tamara Sutton (No. 87).
