twin brother who plays primarily in the
midfield. At Plano Senior High School,
Rosenbeig lettered three years in soccer.
He made the ODP Region III pool along
with his brother.
“Jonathan is another versatile player
who can play in the back, in the midfield
or upfront,” Berson said. “He is very com
posed and reads the game well and will
certainly help us in the midfield or the
back this season.”
Modesto, Calif., native Ryan Daley
will see time at forward for the Game
cocks in 2000. Daley played soccer at
Grace M. Davis High School in Modesto
but will be graduated from the Braden
ton Academy in Bradenton, Fla. This is
the same school that produced Carolina
midfielder Tim Glowienka.
As a Spartan at Davis High School,
Daley was named All-Central California
Conference during his freshman, sopho
more and junior seasons. He scored over
15 points during his first three years of
high school. He was also a member of the
U.S. under-17 national team.
“Ryan has the ability to score goals at
any time,” Berson said. “We will need his
abilities with the loss of our top three
scorers from last year.”
Jack Cummings hails from Cincin
nati and will see action in the midfield for
USC in 2000.
Among Cummings’ individual awards
are being named to the adidas ESP event
after his junior year and also playing on
the Region II ODP team. At Summit
Country Day School, Cummings’ squad
were Ohio state champions, and he was
named to the all-city team.
Cumming? also earned first-team all
conference honors in 1999. The 6-foot
1 forward played club soccer for the
Cincinnati Premier squad.
“Jack is a technical player who is very
composed and has good vision,” Berson
said. “He is a versatile player who can
play in the center or the outside of the
midfield or in the center of the back.
He is an excellent passer of the ball.”
Raymore, Mo., native Ryan Barber is
a 6-foot-2 defender. Barber attended Ray
more Peculiar High in Peculiar, Mo., while
lettering four years in soccer and two in
golf.
Barber earned first-team all-confer
ence honors for three straight seasons, al
so earning first team all-district honors
during his junior and senior seasons. Dur
ing Barber’s senior season, he was named
to the second-team all-metro and first
team allstate. This spring, Barber will
make an appearance with the Canadian
National under-20 team.
“Ryan has good size and agility, and
he lias played every position on the field,”
Berson said. “He is an excellent attack
ing player in the air.”
. The eight signees will first see action
on Aug. 26 when USC travels to the Soc
cer Showcase in Fort Wayne, Ind. The
Gamecocks will face Notre Dame to kick
off the 2000 season.
Volleyball
USC assistant coach Scott Sanctel was
named the head women’s volleyball coach
at Northern Michigan Wednesday. Sandel,
the ninth head coach in 26 years at NMU,
will begin his duties March 10.
Sandel has been an assistant under
head coach Kim Christopher since 1997.
During his tenure, the Gamecocks fin
ished second in the SEC Eastern division
and advanced to postseason play twice.
Football
The USC football team will play a
two-game home and home football se
ries with the University of Virginia be
ginning in the 2002 season.
The Gamecocks will travel to Char
lottesville to play the Cavaliers cm Sept.
7,2002 and then host U\A the follow
ing season on Sept. 6 in Columbia. Both
contests will be the second game of the
season for USC, years in which the Game
cocks will have a 12-game schedule.
Recent NCAA legislation permits Di
vision 1-A schools to play 12 football
contests during those years in which there
are 14 Saturdays from the first permis
sible playing date through the last play
ing date in November. That will also be
the case in 2008,2013,2014 and 2019.
USC and UVA have met 32 times
over the years, with die Gamecocks hold
ing a 20-11-1 lead in the series. The
last meeting came in 1987 at Colum
bia, with USC winning 58-10.
Also, head coach Lou Holtz’s con
tract was not rolled over after his 0-11
initial season, leaving him four years
on his current contract. Athletics Di
rector Mike McGee apparently adhered
to his policy of not extending contracts
for coaches with losing seasons, but how
ever did extend the contract of offensive
coordinator Skip Holtz.
Skip Holtz’s contract received a
rollover because of a previous condition,
agreed to at his hiring. Although his fa
ther did not receive either a raise or an
extra year, Lou Holtz will still make
about $1 million dollars annually from
his total financial package.
